It's a lot more impressive when they don't make it into a fuel economy race to save a pit stop.

It's pretty standard for oval racing so you don't end up with boring races with someone lapping everyone else. It makes sense because yellow flags are more common in oval races, and cars go a lap down when pitting under green, so you can win an oval race just because of lucky timing.
