Had Alonso taken turn 1 in the beginning, I wonder how Max would have changed his strategy.
Alonzo's strategy to settle back, take care of his tires and push Max to make a wear his mediums longer might have panned out if he'd made the right choice on his pit. He got a little greedy and it overrode his experience sense. He would be right there if he'd made the right tire call.

Agreed, but making up 7+ seconds on Max and passing him on track would have been a very tall order.

I don't think it was. He allowed Max to pit second and wait to make the right decision.
Alonso let Max off the hook by pitting first.
