It seems like multiple lines can work, it just take time and guys actually doing it. Problem is, no one wants to take the risk in the middle of the race, so it gets boring.

Good race, I missed the first Duel. Was it pretty clean?

It was except for Blaney and Suarez getting together in a pitting snafu costing Suarez the chance to race in the 500

Yeah, but got one crash between Suarez and Blaney. It was an issue of Suarez following guys who slowed down to pit, and he and Blaney swerved into each other.

My Daytona 500 dark horse, BJ McLeod:

Hate that for Suarez, he’s been in some really good equipment in the past but just never been able to put it together.

In 2016 he was an Xfinity Series champ, then he was the replacement for Carl Edwards at JGR. Then he gets kicked out of that ride and spends a year at SHR before getting booted again and going to a basement dweller team. Quite the fall in a 3 year span.

There was a guy running ARCA when I first started running a few ARCA races from Georgia. He ran a green and white car #0. He failed to qualify for the ARCA race at Daytona but he stayed the next week and took the same car and raced his way into the 500. I can’t remember his name to save my life. He had a hotel chain as a sponsor and always had a huge pineapple on the hood of his car.
His pit crew wore shirts that said “We’ve never won a race, but we’ve never lost a party”
Delma Cowart........ Masters Economy Inn #0

He’ll be the goofiest looking guy in the field, though

Plates are an equalizer but I’m not sure McLeod can keep up with the draft unfortunately

BJ is from somewhere in South Florida and his family always had money, but nowhere near enough to fund a Cup team. He has a small operation and rents out cars in the truck and xfinity series... or whatever they’re calling it now. It allows him to stay in racing and attempt a few races a year.
But, you’re right. He will most likely make a few laps, and if there isn’t a big crash at the beginning of the race that would allow him to move up a few spots, he will most likely park it and collect his $$$ and come back in a few weeks and do it again. At a few of the races with lower car counts Nascar will actually pay people like him to show up just to make sure they have a full field. If not NASCAR doesn’t receive their TV money. When there was plenty of teams they would start 43 cars.

Not sure if he was driving his own car or not, but McLeod did manage to finish 19th in the Daytona 500 last year. He’s not really my dark horse pick, he’s just a funny looking dude because of his weird hairstyles.
ETA: He drove for Rick Ware Racing in last year’s Daytona 500, and that’s who he is driving for this year.

In a sense.... Carl Edwards sudden retirement has sort of killed Suarez’s momentum. He was in line to take over the 77 and considered for long term at Furniture Row. Once Carl retired, the dominoes never quit falling. And every one seems to have affected him.

Delma Cowart........ Masters Economy Inn #0 He was something else...

Cowart made the 1992 Daytona 500 and made his trademark quote, "I ain't never won a race, though I ain't lost a party." An accident-filled qualifying race allowed Cowart to finish 13th and advance to the Daytona 500. "When we made the race," Cowart said, "I went out and hired a team physician. I figured we needed a team physician. I figured we needed one for all the physical requirements of our fine crew. What does the doctor specialize in? He's a veterinarian, because all we've got on our crew is a bunch of dogs!" A legendary party ensued at a Daytona area hotel. "I don't think he showed back up at the track until Sunday," Benny Parsons recalled.
The Daytona 500 that year was plagued by accidents, allowing Cowart to finish 25th, earning a career high $23,285. With the money, he bought a big screen TV and travelled to the following race at Rockingham, finishing 35th there.

That’s awesome! Guys like Delma were what made racing fun. He did it because he loved it, not for the money or prestige. He always had the same group of guys with him year after year. They weren’t paid employees, just guys that liked racing and wanted to help Delma go race.... that just doesn’t happen much any more.
That party was at the Rodeo Lodge on the corner of International and A1A. His team changed the sign on the hotel sign to let everyone know Delma’s party was there. I don’t remember exactly what it said but it was a masterpiece. It had originally said “Welcome race fans”.

BJ has been driving for Rick on and off for a few years now but he pays for most of it out of his own pocket. There are several drivers out there who either pay teams to let them drive their equipment or put together deals to bring their own sponsor. He is definitely in need of a makeover.... I met him for the first time in 2005 or 2006. He did look sort of normal at one time...
Looks like he may be going for the Scott Bloomquist look...
Or considering joining the WWE

Truck race tonight. Unfortunately the start is delayed for track drying after more rain. Seems like this weekend is going to be rain plagued.
Also unfortunately, Logano is guest commentating the truck race tonight.
