re: 2017 NHL Playoff Thread: PENGUINS WIN THE CUP, Crosby robs Malkin of the Conn Smythe

An Obama speechwriter, and Caps fan, talks about having to write the speech saluting the Penguins Stanley Cup win last year. It's a good read.

quote:
As with any good speech, the process began with research. I clenched my jaw and read recaps of the Penguins’ remarkable turnaround season. I grew nauseous as I dug through fawning profiles about enemies of the state such as Matt Murray and accomplices such as Phil Kessel. I steeled myself for a conversation with Pittsburgh’s villainous front office, from whom I learned begrudgingly about the commendable deeds this contemptible team performed in the community, such as restoring city parks and making their facilities more energy efficient.
And then I read about how Crosby gave teammate Trevor Daley the honor of being the first player after the captain to skate with the Cup. Crosby did it so that Daley’s mother could see her son lift the trophy just days before she passed away. I was genuinely moved. I’m a fan, not a monster.
Still, loyalty demanded taking the Pens down a peg. I offered a jab at Evgeni Malkin, who had been caught awkwardly snapping a camera-phone photo of the president during the team’s last visit to the East Room, in 2009.
At one point, a baby in the crowd cried. President Obama ad-libbed an apology for the dad jokes we scattered through the speech. “These are so corny,” he said. Good, I thought to myself; the Penguins don’t deserve our best stuff anyway.

Crazy historic Pens-Caps stat. The Pens are 8-1 all-time in playoff series against the Caps. the Caps are 8-1 all-time in Game 1 of those series.

I thought about getting NHL 17, but will wait until the Las Vegas team is added.

How are the Blues cursed, but the Capitals aren't? And several goalies like Thomas and Quick will disagree that all hot goalies eventually cool off.

Oh, the Caps are cursed, too. But they have the best roster in the league, which sort of helps fighting a curse. The Blues are relying on good fortune to continue to smile on them to win the Cup, and that's a bad plan if you're the Blues. The Blues are with the Caps and Canucks as those franchises that should never, ever count on getting a good bounce.

How are the Blues relying on good fortune? They had the best record in the league since Yeo was hired.

Welll, they are getting destroyed on possession in the playoffs. No one has anywhere close to their 43.2 CF%. That's Colorado Avalanche-esque. They have the worst faceoff percentage of any team in the playoffs, and they've been outshot at 5's by a crazy margin of FORTY shots on goal in just six games.
To advance, they are relying on the 3rd highest shooting percentage of any team in the playoffs, and a goalie whose save percentage has gone, by game:
981 - 958 - 976 - 929 - 919 - 875.
Hey, wins count as wins. Don't take it off the board or anything. But the Blues' playoff success seems pretty unsustainable from here unless they start reversing those trends.

How stupid is the NHL to have the games alternating Eastern conference one night and Western conference the next night?
Have one East series with the Preds/Blues and start those games at 6 and 8:30 on one night; then the other East series with the Oilers/Sharks and have those games start at 7/9:30 the other night? (all times central, of course).
Instead we get two games on at the same time tonight.

Pretty dumb. Hopefully that corrects soon

Gonna be mostly watching the Draft tonight, stupid arse timing NHL.
But the Pens haven't won game 1 of a road series since 2001 so...

Interesting stats. Especially puck possession. Other than Game 1 against Wild, the other games have had pretty even shots on goal. Blues were much improved defensively with Yeo, so that surprises me puck possession has been so bad. They took too many bad penalties last night, so they need to clean that up.

At some point this weekend, both Conference games on the same day is no longer aligned. I doubt many people in the STL or Nashville like the 8:30 (which is really 8:45) start times.

I won't be watching much NFL Draft. It isn't much see TV for me anymore. There really wasn't much the NHL could have done differently. ABC used to always air playoff games during the draft when it still started on Saturday.

Well they could have started this series Wednesday instead of Thursday as the biggest series of this round starting it during the Draft is dumb, put one of the smaller market less hype series against the Draft not your marquee matchup.
Posted on 4/27/17 at 6:16 pm to UltimateHog
Really doubt it would make a difference either way. I think NBC wanted Capitals/Penguins on Saturday night anyway.

Agreed. Couldn't care less about the draft. Used to be a huge fan but not really appealing anymore.
Posted on 4/27/17 at 6:20 pm to CRDNLSCHMCPSN11
Maybe, but I'll disagree and say it matters a lot in ratings outside the markets tonight.
