Watching AP is alot like watching mike tyson in his prime; you can't fault AP for making his opponents look that bad, because he's that good. You got horses that were running 100+ beyers coming into the derby that he's literally running into the ground. That's not a bad crop, that's a bad arse horse
That's like saying Secretiarit is a bad horse because sham finished last in the Belmont. Big red made his arse quit

Curlin has got to rank with the best of this millennium.
I fricking hate Todd Pletcher.

Secretariat is the GOAT for three reasons.
1. He won every race in the Triple Crown while setting track records that still stand today(from 1973).
2. Had there been no Secretariat, Sham who finished 2nd in the Derby and Preakness and who started strong in the Belmont before giving up the Big Red would have won the Triple Crown no doubt.
3. Our Native finished 3rd at the Derby and Preakness and while I wouldn't guarantee a Belmont win had he run, had there been no Big Red and Sham he would have been a legit Triple Crown contender.
To dominate as ferociously as he did against two elite horses makes him the GOAT.
Side note: Pulling hard for American Pharoah to win Triple Crown as I do for every horse that contends, I want to see one in my lifetime.

I know why you use a whip or supposed to use a whip.
As far as greatest horse not win the TC (unless I'm misreading the tenor of the discussion) has to be Alydar.

I was pulling for California Chrome bc I was there, but I didn't like him like I like American Pharoah
I think AP is a special horse. California Chrome was a good story, but thought he got some great trips and breaks in regards to who was hurt

HRTV like 2-3 years ago did a documentary on sham and they interviewed lafit pincay and he said he was going in the race all confident becuase he knew what he was sitting on and he told everyone that his horse was gonna run the race of his life in the derby.
And he did. Sham ran the 2nd fastest derby of all time. It just so happens that he was born the same year as the horse who ran the fastest derby of all time
he said after the race he still could not believe he got beat becuase sham ran his eyeballs out. like sham's derby is like the best sports performance no one ever talks about lol he ran like.. they didn't have beyer's back then but if they did his would have been like 120-125 and got thumped. And i mean, he not only got beat he almost got beat by 3 lengths!

Sham was a triple crown winner any other year except 73.

But i knew there was no way in hell he was winning at 12F.
Pharoah is probably 4-5 lengths better than chrome on his best day. Last year's crop wasn't the best bunch but chrome was a good horse. Let me rephrase that the horses that ran in the derby weren't good, shared belief is the best horse in the world.
holy shite i want to see Shared Belief and AP in the classic that would be blame/zenyatta like excitement. AP is good. But a healthy shared belief is a different animal. I don't know if he wants any of that. But he might very well. I really don't know

VERY hypothetical here, but if pharoah wins the triple crown do they immediately retire him for fear of injury/bounce or let him finish the year?
I wonder this every year we have a chance at one
Except for funny cide's year, obviously

AP looked good in the slop. It's nice when Belmont matters for the triple crown. Hardcore golf and horse fans won't like this but it's like when Tiger has the lead on a Major Sunday. Everyone is watching.

if he wins the tripe crown, he could very well be retired. he'll be worth too much at stud, and unlike i'll have another and California Chrome, AP has stallion blood lines.
They could probably get 150-200k a pop out the gate, that's just too much to turn down, which is a shame.

horse racing when you really want to talk about it at a technical level is a lot like boxing. There's nothing you can really do to say "okay this is the best horse ever" becuase there are too many distances, etc.
I'm not as high on big red overall as everyone else is for the simple fact that he has a losing record against older horses. He lost to fricking onion

With that said, if you're talking, american classic distance racing, 10F on dirt, fast main track, you put 12 of the best horses ever in one starting gate, i'd put my money on spectacular bid. Bid never in his life lost a race under 12F and set the track record for 2 different 10F races, he won the Strub in 1:57 and change. Bid was too fast at 10F to let shake lost and big red would have never caught him and bid was too good to be ran into the ground at 10F. Bid was virtually unbeatable at 10F or less. Probably the most underrated horse in horse racing history, stupid arse trainer and stupid arse owner
At a mile I think Dr. Fager is the best horse ever. I mean he was just too fast.
With that said, I think Big Red was the best race horse in american history at any race over 10.5F. In races where he could let his stamina take over. His talent was not so much his speed but that he could carry his speed for such long periods of time. He was virtually unbeatable at 12F the Belmont distance.
Funny enough I think big red might very well have been the best american turf horse ever. he really has a turf pedigree and won his 2 turf races by 11 lengths combined . The further you ran the lesser chance he had of losing. the only time he lost over 10F is on a sloppy track

Read your history on how that race went down and you don't make that post.

I know how that race went down. And still doesn't change the fact that Upset won. No matter how hard you try it's a blemish that can't be erased. He got boxed and couldn't move and tried to run him down as a 2 yr old.
