MLB: 22 (30 teams)
NFL: 17 (32 teams)
NHL: 17 (31 teams)
MLS: 12 (23 teams) (began 1996)
NBA: 12 (30 teams)

Feel free to fact check this. I could be one off here or there. Just some perspective into the parity of the differen US leagues.

If you want to go with current franchises only, you have to remove the Seattle SuperSonics and St Louis rams, but I think that might be it?

Forgive me for excluding nascar.

I guess the best way to look at this with leagues expanding at different rates, would be to determine how many teams there were on average across the duration.

The NBA has six different champions this decade which is pretty good when you consider how the game is structured. For comparison's sake, MLB also has six different champions and the NHL has five different champions in the 2010s. Only the NFL has more parity than the NBA with seven different champions this decade.

Yea but a decade is a pretty small sample size. I think buckeye vol makes a relevant point though

If anyone wants to look at the number of different teams that actually made their respective finals, I think that too would be interesting to see.

If football goes to 97% and that only team that hasn’t won is still the Falcons I would be so happy.

i counted 18 for the NFL with the Eagles being a newcomer on the list back in January.

I may have counted the Raiders twice by accident cause they won it 1980 as the Oakland Raiders and then as the L.A. Raiders in 1983

oh well..
