for xmas, my grandpa said he will get me a share of stock for any company I want...i don't know much about stock, how does it work? Do i actually get a sheet of paper, and is one sheet of paper=one share?

Also, which share of stock should I get? I'm thinking Apple but I like Google too.

Oh, yeah..it's REAL good.

Please video your grandpa's reaction when you tell him what stock you want for him to buy you. You might be able to get him on America's Funniest Home Videos.....

Outside of Berkshire Hathaway Class A, it's probably not even worth it to own only 1 share of stock in any company. Best case scenario, you make a couple hundred bucks, and that's if the stock sees massive gains relative to your cost basis. You could theoretically day trade a few hundred and turn it into a much larger sum, but someone just starting out isn't going to be able to do that. Were I you, I'd tell him not to measure his gift in terms of share amounts, but rather find a cash amount that he's willing to give you that you can then go and buy stock with. I've certainly seen folks turn a couple hundred into a few thousand before, but it was by buying high risk, high reward companies, companies whose low price would make it completely worthless to hold only 1 share in.

This guy has a great chance to dupe his grandfather. I'd make him pony up, too.

Are we sure there isn't an international stock worth more than BRK-A?

Not one that trades on a U.S. exchange.

Just in case you don't get what's going on, Berkshire Hathaway Class A shares go for about $120,000 per share. On a per share basis, your grandfather would have to cough up a bunch of money in this scenario. The next highest is Seaboard Corp which trades for around $2,000 per share. Everything below that is from the hundreds of dollars all the way down to 1/100 of a cent.
