3 kids .. 3rd is in college now. We opened it in the name of the first them rolled it over when he graduated. Only had one year of two in college at one time.
We didn’t always use it. There were times we just paid the book money or meal ticket .. it didn’t hurt us ido so.
Now we have exactly enough for the third to finish school. She’s out of state and had we not done it how we did we’d be payingway more out of our pocket than we did with the two boys.

I have similar feelings about 529. Were just doing investment accounts for our kids. Not sure they’ll go to college, college is less and less a requirement to be successful, I think we do kids a disservice by not making them have skin in the game, etc. I’m going to open and willing to find a startup biz with those dollars if either of them would prefer to go start a business as opposed to college.

My parents aren’t rich, but they have just one grandchild. They never made a special account or promised anything. When grandkid started college, they started mailing them a $500 check (surprise!) each month. No strings. Continued doing so through completion of grad school.
If the grandkid had become a junkie, they could have shut it down and not worried about 529 rules on the balance. Or if grandkid had skipped college to join the circus, just keep the money and enjoy it.
