Disappointed because he has changed his position.

I think he flipped on btc because someone explained to him how it can be used during financial repression. If you read between the lines on what he, Bessent, and others in the admin have said, plus the Genius and Clarity Acts you can see the direction we're headed.

A stablecoin is just a digital Eurodollar and they clearly want to gain control of the Eurodollar market. The Fed and Treasury have wanting to seize control of that from London for decades. LIBOR to SOFI was step one. The substitution of stablecoins approved and regulated by DC for traditional Eurodollars is step 2. What backs a stablecoin? T-bills. The Eurodollar market, on a deposits to deposits basis is estimated at 13-16T. Substitute Eurodollars for stablecoins and you don't need to worry about who's going to keep buying the long end of the yield curve. You can refinance a lot of the debt at the short end.

Curtail long end supply and yields come down. There is a loose relationship between the btc market cap and stablecoin demand. When btc rips, especially with institutional demand, stablecoin market caps swells because that's how big players enter.

This is getting long winded but there's more to it. I think they are going to push btc/ibit as a savings tech for ordinary folks. Save in btc, spend in tether/circle and they're going to push it worldwide. We're at the end of an 80 yr debt cycle and smaller fiat currencies are going to fail and those countries will get carrots if the dollarize (w/ stables). Failed monetary regimes that go Euro or RMB will get sticks.

Now, who holds the stablecoins you're going to spend? Your bank. Does your bank deserve to get 4+% on your money (remember they're backed by high yielding short term bills)? No. frick the banks, who likes them? Nobody. So what do you do if you're Bessent? You skew treasury issuance heavily towards bills and cut rates at the short end to a pittance, 60-70 bips. Presto, your interest expense just plummeted.

This is financial repression 101. Hold rates below nominal growth to inflate your debt away. Everyone holding dollars gets fricked. But...what is going to rip your face off during this inflation? Btc. If you stuff enough of that into pensions, insurance co balance sheets etc...you can conceivably inflate (grow according to Bessent) your way out of the hole while minimizing the riots, pitchforks and social unrest.

Could it work? Maybe. Is it the least bad option given the debt math? Probably. I think that's where they're headed.

I agree with you that he likes the shitcoin grifting aspect too, lol. He and his kids have made a fortune selling garbage to rubes. But the big picture of what Bessent is trying to do is the above imo.

Wut? So the solution to the money printing problem is to create a new type of currency and then tell the EU it will need to adopt our new digital currency? All that remains is ordering the Europeans to turn in their euros in exchange for our state of the art stablecoins.

Wouldn’t it be simpler to just stop offering interest on the T-bills. Instead we’d just sell the T-bills for USD and investors will receive stablecoins over time.

The EU has absolutely nothing to do with Eurodollars. A Eurodollar is just a dollar that originates offshore. Go to a bank in Bermuda and borrow $100. Congratulations, you have 100 Eurodollars.

They’re just called that because they originated in the City of London in 50s when the Soviets couldn’t access the US banking system. A decade or so later you could borrow “dollars” from countless banks around the globe. Those are all called Eurodollars and it encompasses the entire offshore/shadow banking system. Any bank that lends dollars outside the jurisdiction of the Fed is Eurodollar bank.

Well I clearly don’t understand how stable coins solve shadow banking. It still sounds like a fancy tech age shell game.

It gives the savages in DC a bit of control which they’ve never had. No one knew exactly how Bretton Woods was actually going to work. There were a lot of unknowns, one of which was the birth of a multi trillion offshore dollar network that falls under no flag or jurisdiction.

The USD is the currency of the United States and it’s a very stable currency.

Trump is the president of the United States and therefore the number one advocate for our currency. Crypto is a threat to our currency. At least that’s part of its intent.

Trump who is clearly on record denegrating crypto has changed his tune. Did he change his tune because he thinks the USD is in trouble? Did he change because he saw an opportunity to profit?

Either way, he, as president of the United States, needs to fight for the integrity of the USD. He should give zero credibility to any competing currency.

But here he is just 4 short years after his original statement about crypto being illegitimate being an advocate.

Is it for Americans best Interest? Nope.
Clearly it’s because he sees an opportunity to profit. And he has. A lot.

It’s wrong and unfortunately the sheep can’t see it. They think it’s cool. They think he’s progressive.

And maybe someday we’ll have a crypto currency to replace the USD but as president of the United States, he needs to advocate for what we have now. He isn’t the person to be advocating for any form of competing currency.

He did get de-banked after his first term and ran a VERY pro crypto campaign.

It looks to me like trump is using the office as a big F-you to anyone he perceives as an enemy and wants to cash in.

I definitely don’t follow.

What I do follow is that bitcoin went from 117,000 dollars to 64,000 dollars in less than a year so it’s volatile as hell and not worth a squat as a currency.

And when people stop cashing in their bitcoin for the USD, we’ll know that the shtf

We’re a long way from that

Total supply increased 40% during covid. We have two generations of adults who can't afford homes or families. Native birth rates are dropping as a result. If you're just looking at dxy, sure, the dollar is stable but that is misleading. Dxy only measures how fast usd is sinking relative to other, also failing, fiat currencies. Go dig through your bank statements, find a restaurant receipt from 2019, what would that dinner cost tonight? Is that stability?

Btc was born in the aftermath of the GFC when the dollar was printed into oblivion to fund corporate socialism.

Btc would still be worth 10 cents and the shitcoin industrial complex wouldn't exist if the dollar were stable. The threat to the dollar is it's rapidly growing supply, US sovereign debt and the $100T off balance sheet bill from FDR and Johnson's entitlement programs.

Our entire manufacturing base was shipped abroad to support the dollar's reserve status. The beneficiaries of that include Wall St, DC and China. It was not good for America and it certainly wasn't good for 99% of Americans.

Now we're at the end of the line. The govt "makes" 5T/yr and spends 7. There are only three things that can be cut that would make a difference, entitlements, defense and interest. Interest is by far the fastest growing expense. Which do you think they'll cut?

I think you’ve missed my point a bit

The president of the United States is the flag bearer for the country and with that- it’s currency

He is the one person who should not give any credence to a competing currency. Yet he’s been laying the groundwork for crypto and additionally profiting massively.

What other currency is better?

what does that have to do with the value of bitcoin versus the dollar?

Bottom line here- Trump needs to support the USD as president of the US and with that is the understanding that other forms of currency, including crypto, are not supported.

As for your personal usage of bitcoin, there ought not be any restriction on your ownership or usage as currency. People have used all sorts of things as currency for centuries.

By the way- what do you use bitcoin for?

Again, as US president, he ought to be advocating for the USD and that means discrediting crypto. Pardoning crypto criminals and cashing in is wrong

And I think you missed mine. I don't wrap the dollar in the flag. Those are two different things. One represents a grand republican experiment and the other, controlled by a small cartel of private interests, has become a tool of empire abroad and wealth extraction at home. A sound argument can be made that during the last 5 decades of monetary policy the dollar has become a threat to much of what the flag represents.

As I was typing this Trump's Treasury Dept announced that they are going to use the TGA to support the long end of the yield curve. They are telling you in plain English that the value of the dollar will be sacrificed to support the bond market, aka their ability to continue to spend money they don't have.
quote:

What other currency is better?
None of them. In a sea of sinking ships, the dollar has the smallest hole in it's hull but all its occupants will eventually have to learn to swim.

Money has three functions, store of value, medium of exchange and unit of account. Emergent monies gain these properties in that order and mature fiats lose them in that order. The dollar has shed its ability to store value and nothing Trump says or does can undo that.
quote:

what does that have to do with the value of bitcoin versus the dollar?

Everything. Bitcoin has no value in a world with a stable dollar that performs all three functions of money. It derives its present value from the dollar's inability to store value.

To store value, to multiply my net worth, to not work, to alleviate financial anxiety and to sleep soundly.

Usd and and btc aren't mutually exclusive and won't be until much further in the future, when we're all dead and gone. If you read what I posted yesterday, I didn't say this explicitly, but I certainly meant to imply it, I believe btc will be used to extend the life of the dollar by shouldering the store of value function the dollar shed long ago. Save in btc, spend in usd/tether. There's a generational aspect to this. Gold serves the same function for older people who have made theirs. For younger people btc is gold.

We are in agreement on the pardons and shitcoin grifting. Regarding the grifting, as I said in another thread, the only difference between Trump and the rest of the grifters in DC is scale. He has a bigger rake. It took Pelosi decades to insider trade herself to 200M. Trump made more than that during the weekend before the inauguration with his shitcoin rugpulls. Frankly this is exactly what you should expect at the end of an 80 yr debt cycle. This is the loot the treasury phase of empire decline. It has played out like this countless times in history.

This is what you said you used Btc for.

I ask why. It’s been horrible. There are much better stores of value

And why are you showing the Btc to home value ?
Are you suggesting to buy Btc instead of a home?
