I just got an email saying USAA is terminating the 2.5% cash back credit card at the end of the year. Starting next year, it will only be 1.5% cash back. This is a bummer.

Yeah, they sent something in the mail a few weeks back. 2.5% on everything was always too good to be true, but I hoped they would have only cut it back to 2%. 1.5% kinda kills it for me.

Going to be hard to replace as the all-around card in my wallet. I'll wait until November-December to see if any new cards or promos come out in the meantime. I'll probably settle for one of the 2% cards if any have good new customer promos.

Yea we use that for everything. It was a good run. I'll probably go back to using the CITI double cash back card. FML.

Have one as well, but use my Cap 1 Savor more often then not.

4% on dinning and entertainment is awesome for us.

I have one of those too. Don't ever really use it.

got the same notice. They did immediately eliminate some benefits effective today. I think one of them was paying taxes is no longer eligible for cash back.

The day is coming when USAA will sell off its banking arm to some mega bank and just be an insurance company again.

Same here. Real bummer. We have enough cash back built up to pay for more than 50% of our upcoming trip to Mexico. I guess I'll shop for an alternative over the next few months.

In my limited research I've found some possible replacements to get 2.5%+, BUT they all require some extra stuff to qualify.

- Bank of America cashback cards can get boosted to 2.5%+ if you are a preferred customer, but this requires $20,000-100,000 maintained in their Merrill investment accounts

- Alliant will give you 2.5% if you keep a checking account with a monthly average balance of $1,000 and have a monthly recurring deposit.

- There's some reddit threads about a credit union in Alabama that offered a 3% card if you could qualify to join their credit union (reddit threads made it seem fairly easy), but it looks like this was literally discontinued in the last day or two, so nevermind on that one

That's all I could find for cashback cards that aren't limited to categories. The requirements for the Alliant one don't seem TOO difficult, but I just hate having to set up another checking account with $1k sitting in it. May just get one of the 2%ers and maybe sprinkle in a few more 5% category cards
