I hope you have applied for all the public assistance that's available to you/your family.

In a similar direction, be sure you've registered for the Public Service Student Loan forgiveness program. As a state employee, you should qualify. It might give you some relief to know that your federally subsidized loans can be forgiven after 120 qualifying payments if you are employed by the state for the duration.

This doesn't amount to much in La unless you live at or below the poverty level for your family size, most programs are income based and you basically have to wait on your waiver spot. We just got ours for our son and he has been on the list for 14yrs. His waiver spot allowed him to qualify for Medicaid but no other financial services due to our income

Yea, I've swallowed my pride and do receive some assistance. My goal is to be independent of course. My wife suggested possibly moving short-term just to gain experience, which I am open to. Gonna send out some more applications around the area and if no dice, I will explore LC or BR possibilities.

There's nothing shameful about receiving assistance. That's why it's there. Taking care of a child with a disability is also a big financial drain and a lot of work.

As far as a career change -- how old are you? I'm guessing you had prior work experience before you went to college. As many posters have already said, it'll be tough if you just limit yourself to Lafayette. You really need to expand your job search -- even if that means selling or renting your home.
