30 year old kids still living with their parents seems to be a trend among the liberal arts crowd, but they could probably do some of the house and yardwork.
That has more to do with the individual than the degree

I don't know what public school your kids are going to, but you better make sure they are in a decent one if you expect them to keep up at the college level and *KEEP* their scholarships.

I have no expectation to fund 100% of it. But I do feel compelled to subsidize it. I've been making monthly contributions toward a 529, but not at a level that will make me sacrifice too much. If they need to take out a loan to finish college, I'll probably offer a matching funds arrangement, where I'll pay $x for every $y they pay.
We should be kind to our kids. They may be choosing who they pay to wipe our asses one day.

In Louisiana, any kid who is worth funding for college should qualify for TOPS.

My parents deal with me was that they would cover all of my costs as long as I kept above a 3.0 gpa, which in GA means you have the Hope Scholarship and free tuition.
I will have the same deal with my kids only it will apply to all schools/circumstances. If they dip below a 3.0, they are on their own.
The idea of a bs degree will never enter the equation bc by the time they are 18, they will essentially be a mini-me and all values I hold they will as well.

TOPS isn't going to be around when my kids go to college

I have a 4 month old and live in BTR. I don't have enough money to fully fund a college education, but I do have enough money to send my kid to a private school and put some money into a 529. I am trying to decide whether to move to prairieville or zachary to avoid private tuition and put more money away for college/retirement.
That being said, I believe the kid has a JOB just like his parents, and that JOB is to do HIS BEST to get a scholly for college. If he doesn't get one but did his best, then we'll help him with options.
My JOB as his parent is to prepare him and help him with his JOB. I think that means investing maximally in the best elementary, middle, and high school education that I can afford which probably means private school EBR rather than prairieville/zachary. Secondarily to save as much as I can for college without sacrifice to my retirement well-being.

Good for you.

By the way, if you can afford private school right now, you're going to get a RAISE when he goes to college (unless he goes to a private college/ivy league school). But if he goes to LSU, you will be getting a nice raise.

I will pay all of my children's education.

My dad basically told me to pay my own way. He paid for my sisters to go to school. He felt as a boy it was easier for me to figure out ways to pay my way. I found a way. I did a lot of jobs I did not want to do. I love my dad very much to this day.

As a student putting myself through school, it is a mother fricker. I will do everything possible to pay for my children college as long as they are making the grades and wise choices.
