I consider myself frugal.

I research the hell out of most purchases. I try to find the balance of value and quality.

Fair to say most on the MTB are pretty frugal.

I think there is a big difference.

I associate tight with frugal. No amount of money is handled loosely and you have tight control over what you are spending and where.

Cheap people can be loose with their money. When they choose to spend their money they only spend the minimum without any regard to quality or long term consequences.

I would say I'm tight with my money or frugal. I always look for the value deal. I don't mind spending a little more on a product if it is higher quality but not outrageously over priced or will last longer etc. I don't like to "waste" money. My friends will say I'm cheap though.

Cheap means buying inferior products simply because they're inexpensive. Tight is choosing wisely by paying more for a quality product, and not blowing money on silly, frivolous, crap that you really don't need. The former will cost you more money in the long run.

The people I refer to has "cheap" are the ones that seem to have no issue spending money on themselves, but try not to spend a dime for the benefit of anyone else including their own family. "Tight" to me means a person that tries not to spend a dime on anything or anyone, and always shops for the lowest price if they are forced to buy something. I consider myself "frugal", I will shop for quality because I want things to last as long as possible, and will pay more for it. I have no need for being in style, owning the latest technology, driving new cars, or in any other way keeping up the Jones's.

TIght: spending little for oneself or family
Cheap: not spending for others or those who serve you

Going to McDonald's for lunch instead of Olive Garden is being tight. Saving instead of spending. An admirable quality.

Giving shitty tips or counting down to the penny when you split a bill is cheap. When your unwillingness to spend something that doesn't directly benefit you affects relationships, you are cheap. One of the worst qualities someone can have as a friend. A cheap person might have a 50k car but they will post on Facebook asking if anyone has a coupon they aren't using. (Family friend actually does this with a brand new Jaguar in the driveway)

Just my associations.
