My sister was told by Nelnet, that she can't defer her loan because she is paid several months in advance and can't defer until she owes money.

So, she is still accruing interest until she can defer the loan.

Are they screwing with her? Is it true she can't defer the loan until she catches up with her payment cycle?

Any ideas? It is going to cost her about $600.00 she doesn't have.

My guess (and this is just a guess) is that there is some loan system restriction that prevents them from applying the deferment when there is no payment due. I would say that if this dialog took place over email, she should talk to a live person.

I'm assuming she gave them a large, one-time payment at some point, causing her to be "ahead". Why didn't they apply it to the principle balance?

Not necessarily. Depends if the loan was subsidized stafford or not.
