I agree with red stick. Don't be a fool. You will not beat the market without educating yourself.
You probably haven't lost money in the market because you haven't been in I long and the past year the market had a phenomenal rebound.
The real question is: did you beat the s&p?

Normally I'd just buy a stable stock and see how it was doing every once in a while. Just buying and holding pretty much. Since I got on deployment and have money around that I don't need right now I started getting more active in trading. I'm made around 1000 in the last 3 weeks (which is good for me) I know there is a ton that I don't know but some small success has me really made me interested and wanting to learn.

What gets most people into trouble is not knowing when to sell. My dad is one of those buy and hold people. He always would say that he didn't want to have to pay taxes. I told him you only pay taxes if you are making money.
He owns georgia gulf(ggc). He has owned it since it was 50/share. He has now rode it all the way down to below $1. Then they did a 25 to 1 reverse split. I'm just saying make sure you don't get attached to any stock.

Do any of y'all use MFI and RSI in making decisions? I don't normally buy a stock if the mfi is above 70. Not sure if I'm putting too much limitations on myself.

Of course. RSI is perhaps the most powerful of all the technical indicators. I use it mainly as a precursor to PPS breakouts.
As for the money flow indicators (OBV, Accum/Dist, MFI, ChiOsc) they are instrumental in that they show not only the money inflows and outflows for particular stocks but (theoretically) which classes of shareholders are responsible for them.
Your On Balance Volume (OBV) are insiders, large stakeholders, etc.
Your Accum/Dist are retail investors. Your mom and pop investor trading through E*Trade or what have you.
Your MFI and Chi Osc are your market makers. Although MFI should be used more to confirm the movements of the RSI while Chi Osc should be used more to gauge this sentiment from market makers.
Here is an excellent write-up detailing the On Balance Volume indicator:

Could someone recommend me a book to read on investing? After reading through some of this thread, I'm not sure I'm ready. I just started "Warren Buffett and the Interpretation of Financial Statements", and I'm pretty comfortable with my grasp of accounting rules, but I'd like to be better armed when it comes to knowing how and when to use financial ratios or any other tools y'all might recommend learning about.

Basic Principles - A random walk down wall street
I read about half of this on spring break and I was extremely interested in it. It's a great beginner's book and he does an excellent job of explaining principles.

Thanks. I'll check it out.
eta: Thanks again, Red Stick. I've been meaning to learn a bit more so I can start having some fun for a while now.

Red days. They happen. These aren't flippers - they're buy and holds.

Haha, I figured you didn't see it. I didn't at first either. I'm studying so am (naturally) looking for a diversion. Got anything I need to look into? Not still short RCII are you? Still holding WIN?

I changed my work schedule today so I could take off at lunch and come home and study. Got home at 1, ate, and immediately started playing NCAA and looking at TD.
:sigh:

Probably going to play one game, go run, then sit down and start doing regression analysis in excel.
