OP please tell me you have Uber rewards set up on your account. If not that is an easy way to drive down the cost even more. Plus when you get to Platinum level you can price protect a certain route. Which of course you would want to use for your commute to work.

Yes I’ve got rewards turned on as well. I figure I’ll hit platinum in a couple months then I can test whether it’s worthwhile to use ride pass. I’ve only taken 2 trips over 2 weeks that were not between my home and work.

I think there is a lot more than car payments that contributes to debt and lack of retirement for many Americans. It’s a contributor but I don’t think we should overplay that hand.

I think it is THE main factor for most Americans.

Depends on your lifestyle outside of work. To not have a vehicle to just jump into on a whim to run an errand, etc would not work for me at all.

Some things trump dollars saved.

So for the month of February I spent $592 on 41 rides. Average trip was $14.40. All but one of the trips was to work. Work is an 11.5 mile trip if we took the toll road or 14 mile if not. If i took the tolls the trip was an extra 1$. So rarely based it on cost; mostly if traffic was bad or not one direction or the other. Quickest trip was a bit over 20 minutes with the longest being just under 40. Most were about 30 though. Most picks up were very quick and without issue. I had to cancel 2 trips as the drivers missed the exit and i didn't want to wait 10 min for the person to turn around. Uber never charged me for the cancelation. Started using my american express as they gave me 50% more rewards points which i can use for free rides (cash back)

A bit of background; my wife doesn't currently work. We have 3 kids (11, 8, 4). Only once was not having a 2nd car a bit of an issue. My wife had to take the oldest on a doctors appointment early in the morning so i need to drop the youngest at daycare. Problem i was lazy and didn't take the child seat out of my wife's car before she left. So I decided we'd walk as its only a bit over a mile. So really need to have a spare child seat for those times so i can throw it into the uber.

Otherwise no real issues yet. Still trying to find a truck to purchase so not sure how much longer this will go for. But certainly not a bad deal financially or causing any inconveniences.

If I'm reading this right you need a car seat for certain Uber rides with the 4 year old.

Check out the WayB car seat. It's expensive, but really light and was designed for your situation.

I doubt they'd fit in a Cosco Scenera Next or something similar but maybe they will.

Why not buy something other then a truck then OP? Buy a small electric car or a used 2 door truck? Those would make more sense then uber?

Well not really trying to save money. Just sharing an experience. Intent is to find a car I like at the right price. Uber offers an affordable way to bridge the gap.

I am liking the 30 min ride where I can catch up on emails and other stuff.
