Six Sigma is valuable if you plant to go into manufacturing. It was created by Toyota, and it's basically just a statistical process for managing quality. The statistics you learn can be applied across fields, perhaps for market trends etc. I would say that for anyone going into business, it's valuable information. However, the black and green belts are not that important because they haven't set a national standard for what that really means. There are general guidelines, but just because you're a blackbelt at one company does not necesassarily qualify you to be a blackbelt at another. I think they're working on a uniform standard, but as far as my understanding, companies are still providing the certifications individually.

I think you are mixing up Just in Time/Lean manufacturing with Six Sigma. JIT/Lean is generally credited to Toyota while Six Sigma is credited to Motorola.

You are thinking Lean. Bill Smith at Motorola is the father of Six Sigma

To be clear, if I pursue the Six Sigma it will be through a University and not via my employer. I'd have the option of USF or Villanova. All said I'd be looking at a $2,000-3,000 investment plus the cost of the exam.
Lots of good info thus far, thanks everyone...
