Depends on the situation as mentioned above you could have a partial automated car/manual car and then you could rent time on a car system. In your example, it could be a system where you are dropped off at parking lot and picked up by a different car. Maybe an Uber type model. Also, if we are fantasizing the parking lots could have some kind of system to where the cars knew which spaces were empty.

I agree with the parking issue. First hurdle that came to my mind.
Also, it's hard to imagine autonomous cars in city/suburb streets from a pedestrian avoidance standpoint. What if a child is playing in a neighborhood and their ball rolls out onto the street? Is an autonomous car just as capable of avoiding an accident than a human driver? Maybe technology will be advanced enough someday, but it's hard for me to imagine.
I could definitely see it happening on the highway system though. That might put an end to lane stoppages on the interstate. I'd be all about no traffic on the Mississippi River Bridge...

one would think there would be a lot of ways to do this -- toss in a few sensors to define where the rows start and stop, and just fill in the gaps in between efficiently, essentially. my neato can effectively map my living room, i think an auto-driving car could find a way to park.
