S&P Fund vs. NASDAQ Fund

Hey guys, mainly a lurker here. I am young and have not invested yet but am currently doing my homework. Warren Buffet along with others on this site frequently say "invest money in an S&P fund." Just curious, with the NASDAQ having a better return over last 10 years and the future even more heavily involved with technology, why do I never hear to start an investment portfolio by putting money in a NASDAQ fund? Thanks

But it's all about limiting exposure to one sector.

If we could predict the future, we'd all be rich and retired already. Look at most fund literature and you'll see something that says to the effect:
Past performance is not an indicator of future performance

Cuz of 2000, 2001 and 2002
S&P gives you access to the largest companies in the Nasdaq plus the largest companies in a variety of sectors

I have been in the technology business for a long time.
QQQ is my favorite investment. It has more volatility than the S&P, but also more upside.
