"The next level" at KPMG

This is kind of an odd video

PWC Changes Compensation Structure

Two major players in the accounting industry making some major changes. It will be interesting to see how the industry responds.

I won't be in Memphis until late July. But I'm definitely interested in an LSU throwdown if we can work it out some other time.

All career services centers suck. Unless you go to top 10.

Anyone ever give what they thought was a solid interview and not receive a call back? I had a phone interview a couple weeks back that I thought went well, but didn't make the cut. And as I've got through the interview in my head, I just can't figure out where it went wrong. Thoughts?

Was this your first interview?

You gotta chalk the first few interviews up as a learning experience. Your focus at this stage in the game is to become as good of an interviewee as possible. The job will follow.

BTW, one day, if possible, I'd kind of like you to expand on how you've used your law degree as a means of positioning yourself for a career in finance.

Generally speaking, the analytical skills you pick up in law school will serve you well in any field which is itself highly analytical, assuming you also have some knowledge of the relevant subject matter. Finance is an extremely analytical field. My law degree will help me in that I am able to peel back an extra few layers anytime I analyze a company or transaction that many non-lawyers may or may not be able to. Law school has also trained my brain to sift through hundreds of pages of information and extract the most relevant bits and pieces therefrom.

More specifically, I concentrated on a Corporate Finance/Securities Regulation track in law school. My mentor had worked in both public and private litigation and in finance and as a lobbyist for financial firms, so he was able to piece together a curriculum for me conducive to a career in finance. If you go the law school route, focus on the business classes, assuming the school offers them, and find a professor who's used his legal education in a financial setting as a mentor.

Wasn't my first, but was one of my first few. Appreciate the advice.

Did they have you do any sort of personality test?

It was a first round phone interview that consisted of a mix of fit and technical questions. I thought I handeled both sets of questions pretty well, other than one wrong answer to a technical question.

Couple follow up questions:

In regards to the potential hire of a law student within a finance capacity, is the prestige of the law school viewed as significantly as the prestige of an MBA program is viewed?

Does class rank matter as much for individuals pursuing a finance track as it does for students pursuing a career in law?

Some law school offer programs where you can knock both out. Have you completed your undergrad?

Recent graduate. Not giving serious consideration to attending law school, but wanting to learn more so that I can make the best possible decision.

Your asking the right people. I would think most people would say a law degree isn't needed.

Just negotiated virtually a brand new Accord (20k miles) for 15k. Got them to knock 3k off the sticker, drop a full 1% off the financing rate, and accept $500 more than my trade-in's blue book value. I literally walked in with my full-year budget and told them I had a number and wasn't budging (never told them my number). They came down 4 times before I accepted, at which point I showed them my number and congratulated them on meeting it. I feel like a got a great value. I could trade it in tomorrow and make 4k.
