Random thought that I don't want to create a new thread for: LSU's MBA program had a mind numbing, pants shitting, ultimately embarrassing placement rate of 35% at the time of graduation. I will give them credit that the jobs accepted were all pretty high quality.

Damn, that seems pretty bad for a business school where graduates can work in a whole host of environments. I wonder how many of that 65% were really hustling for a job. With law, the majority of folks are so damn entitled it's no surprise they don't have jobs. I think most of them thought a hoard of attorneys was going to break down the doors of the school one day and start handing out jobs.

Everyon who worked really hard got one. Also, all of the smartest kids or one. There is a lot of the "I am not taking that job for that salary", but it's still low.

It's more of a testament to our shotty career service dept than the quality of education, IMO.

I remember you saying something along the lines of, "If I can't get a job that pays more than 45k bare minimum, I'm going back to the farm."

That's true. But at least it wasn't "I'm going to play xbox in my parents basement".

Pretty sure that's a widespread sentiment shared by students across the nation

Meh, it's more labor intensive, but much less stress and more flexible.

Farming is going to continue to be a very good career in the future. It just isn't that mentally stimulating.

I couldn't even get my career services guy to send out the info for an internship that I, personally was the recruiter for. After a month, I just asked for a resume list and he sent one that didn't ben have all the finance concentration MBAs on it.

I think most career services departments are pretty bad, for the sole reason that they are almost all really understaffed.

Yeah, they cut ours in half a couple years ago (from 2 to 1) leaving only the guy that makes 35k a year an has no motivation to do a good job. He's a really nice guy, just not motivated, understandably.

Career services departments are terrible apart from getting you the list of alumni contacts in whichever field you're pursuing so that YOU can go and contact them YOURSELF.

That's about all they're worth. And pursuing alumni contacts through the business school of the university at which I attended law school is how I landed my current gig.

Apart from this very ministerial role as "the keeper of the contacts," they are completely useless. And this is even applicable in the professional school setting, as you know, which is sad, considering the money people shell out for post-graduate education.

Agreed. I would have paid another 500 bucks a semester (generating 120k a year or the whole program) if they would just hire two more well qualified go getters for 60k. Plus, I might feel endebted enough to the program to make a donation.

BTW, one day, if possible, I'd kind of like you to expand on how you've used your law degree as a means of positioning yourself for a career in finance.

LAw degrees are very useful in finance, especially fixed income, because being able to understand the legal ramifications of the debt terms is important. It is also great for IB because you are structuring or combining legal entities.

Sorry for highjacking the question, but I am really not liking FSA.

The issue with us is that Career Services is A) too focuses on opportunities solely for business majors and B) does not spread a wide enough net outside of Memphis.

We have an alumni database that is searchable by company, city, etc that is pretty useful. I contacted 3 people all at top tier firms are 2 of them contacted me back. Our alumni are always willing to help if students reach out.

I can't complain too much--recruitment went better than I ever could have expected.

For non-business majors, even the smartest, getting ANY job is extremely difficult. I have a good friend that is a science major who graduated summa cum laude and he is unemployed. One of the smartest guys I know but it is such a difficult market for those disciplines.

As much as I loathe UNO, they do a pretty good job of getting people interviews locally, at least for accounting. All B4, the major regional firms, all the big local firms, and a handful of corporate openings. MBA is a different story, but that's as much the fault of people going from a poli sci degree to an mba and still not having any idea what they intend to do.

Equity and FSA re-review via summaries tomorrow. Break tomorrow night. Might have to find another practice test, I only have the CFA one, and I hear the Stalla ones are particularly useless for L2.
