Money Talk is going to have one hell of a geographic footprint by the end of this year. BTW, lynx, do you have a tie to LSU or did you just stumble across this board some time ago?

Entire family went to school there...I was an outcast for choosing somewhere else for awhile

Hey Lynx,
I'm looking into the LSU ID&L Accounting Program to fulfill the hours needed for the CPA, and I remember you having participated in it. What are your thoughts on the program? And are there any downsides to it, other than the lack of access to LSU's career services' on campus job fairs and online resume drops? Also, do you know if it's possible to enroll as a degree-seeking student (so that I'll have access to LSU's career services) even though I've already graduated?
Just trying to figure out what I'm getting myself into.
Thanks in advance.

Hyundai Sonata GLS 2010 with 2k miles = $16,000
LINK
Hyundai Sonata GLS 2009 39k miles = $14,000
LINK
Honda Accord LX 2010 47k miles = $16,000
LINK
Toyota Camry 2010 57k miles = $16,000 (have almost identical car in red and gray)
LINK
I searched for Nissan Maxima's under $15,000 and basically the only things that came up were 2005s or older with 150k miles. I don't think that is a good deal.
From my limited searches, it looks like there is a great shift in value between the $13,000 and $15,500 range. I would personally invest an extra $2k to get a one year old car with much less milage than $2k less than get a 5 year old car with 70k in mileage. For me, the value proposition is there. I saw almost no 2009 with 30k miles for $14,000 listed which surprised me.
From the ones I just found on kbb and listed here, the 2010 Hyundai with $2k miles is basically brand new and on the upper limit of your price range.
I have never driven one of those but they seem to be improving its image and getting pretty good reviews.

I took classes through LSU IDL but not the accounting classes, specifically. I had already taken some of the classes it offers and I wanted to find the easiest two classes possible to get credit. I did both pass/fail and it cost me about $850 total for 6 credits...not a bad deal at all.
It takes a lot of motivation to study the material on your own, but that was the only real downside. I was doing the classes while I was a FT student so it was easy to put them on the backburner from time-to-time.
I am not familiar with how to enroll as a degree-seeking student, so you would have to call them to find out.
Not having access to job fairs is a downfall but it all depends on your reasons for taking the courses.
Are you deciding between a MACC program and the LSUIDL accounting certificate? How many more hours do you need to qualify to sit?

Nice. This will be my first football season in a non-SEC town in years. We'll have to catch a few games at the bar.
Memphis is the perfect location to go to games though away from LSU. Ole Miss is an hour, MSU is about 3, Bama is a little over 4, Auburn about 4, six to Atlanta which is seven for UGA (I would fly rather than drive this one personally), Vandy is only 3 hours, Knoxville is 5, and Little Rock is 2 1/2 when LSU plays ARK there. You can't ask for much better than that

We'll definitely have to meet up when the fall rolls around

Awesome. Thanks man. I'll give them a look tonight when I get home.

Yes, considering between paying out-of-state tuition for a MACC program versus LSU's IDL accounting program.

Need 22 more hours.

What state are you from?

I don't think LSUIDL is 22 credits...I think it is 18.

If you have a job and just need the credits to take/pass teh test, do the ind study thing. If you are trying to get a job, get in a full-time program somewhere, your chances are infinitely better that way.

This is basically my thinking in asking what state he is from...

LA; the Acct. program is 15, but I assumed I'd be able to take additional IDL classes in addition.

So why would you be out of state at LSU if you are from LA?
You can definitely take additional classes.
kfiz hit the nail on the head...what is your job prospect looking like?

I would not be, but I missed the deadline of LSU's MACC program, which was in March.
I'm basically trying to decide if the costs of an out-of-state MACC program (take Ole Miss or Auburn for instance) are worth the benefits of having on-site networking events (which I would not have access to via the IDL program).

Stats probably fall in the median to that of other accounting students. 3.4 GPA. Average work experience.
Ultimately, my question is this:
Throught proactive networking over the summer, can I overcome the lack of on-campus employer interaction that would occur due to the IDL program?

So then you're looking for a job? Go to a MACC.

Next question, how much would OOS MACC program cost?
If you go to Ole Miss, you will have practically a 90%+ chance at job placement.

Only way I would say otherwise is if those programs are just astronomical in price for OOS.

That depends on where you want to work.

If they are, then I would just wait until September and enroll at LSU. Its a difference of 3 months.
