Question about progressive insurance

3 weeks ago, I signed up for a policy though an external agent(house+auto combo). I have the agent my card info. Last night, I get a text about no payment. I went to my bank online account and see no charge. I can’t get in touch with the agent. I call progressive to make a payment but they say only to mail cashier’s check, money order, or western union. This seems odd. Is this their policy?

That is odd. I had Progressive insurance on 2 vehicles and could pay through their online portal.

Their online portal gave me the same message about cashier’s check/money order. If I mail with a personal check or pay with a card, at least I know they will get the payment.

Ya, I just use the app to pay. Ive never mailed a payment to them. Home+auto for me.

well seems like progressive is confirming a policy in their system are they not?

i also don't understand you not getting in touch with agent? have you given them time to get back with you? progressive payments are pretty easy to make for agents. Did your payment not go through cause of funds issues?

I called and emailed the agent and no reply. Just got off the phone with progressive and they said the bank(visa) didn’t disperse the funds. Not sure why they did that. I have to call them now. Still that would be an easy fix if they wound try to accept card payment again.

Are you calling the general Progressive number or one your "agent" gave you? Make sure you contact them independent of your agent to make sure he is legit.

I've had Progressive for home and autos for about a decade now and never had such a problem (I signed up through their site though, didn't go through an agent).

Sounds like your bank either has a limit on your card or they somehow think the charge is fraudulent.

I’ve seen this before. Sounds like your agent issued the policy with your bank info. It takes 2-3 days for the payment to go through. The payment was returned because there either wasn’t enough funds in the account or the agent entered an incorrect routing or acct number.


Progressive will allow you to keep coverage and have no lapse, but they require you to pay via one of those options you mentioned. They won’t let it be paid via CC or draft. After this payment is cleared up, you can go back and pay how you want.
