How is the Engineer Intern (EI) considered a legit professional certification? The basic requirements are getting your degree and passing an academic FE exam while you are still in school. It means you are working towards a professional credential (PE) but does not represent any practical skill or accomplishment on its own. Thus it falls in the academic category (resume), not professional category, at least in my opinion.

In the field of CIVIL ENGINEERING placing EI at the end of one's name on a business card is very much so relevant. It makes a clearer distinction when dealing with pre-professionals. There are many out there who have not yet passed the FE and while it does not carry any where near the professional muscle it adds to the credibility of the young engineer.

And, no, it is not a license but it is a certification.

I have been deeply involved in the private and municiple sectors of Civil Engineering consulting and 'EI' has its place.......now, putting Ei at the end and then placing a title under your name that includes 'Engineer', well, that's actually illegal.

Does any one else find the middle initial to be kind of pretentious, at least for a 26 year old? I'm asking because they're about to make my cards and want to know how I wanted formatted. I told them to leave it off.

Leave if off the business card.

Make it a part of your signature.

Certifications like CAPM, CPA, CFA are acceptable, but your degrees (like MBA, JD, or ME) is really sort of pathetic and rare.

I don't know of an MBA that lists that on a business card, and I would laugh if they did.

Middle initials are also unusual for business cards...especially for younger people.

Unless you have a common name. I work with a Carlos Lopez. There are a few of them around.

I get a kick out of people who put esquire behind their name.

I once met a woman lawyer who did that. And yes, she was a real douche.
