I know someone who ordered his pet's 2 heart medications online. When he got them the labels on the bottles were backward. He didn't realize until his dog ended up in the ER at LSU's Vet School. (his dog made it through btw)
Just know what you are ordering and what they are suppose to look like.

I've been crossing every year for the last aprox. 16 years. Never had a problem. Will be doing the same thing again in Jan. People do this every day. Some go down to the border just to bring back the medicine needed for 6-8 months. Then return again for another supply. In Mexico most generic brands can be found.
The importation of controlled substances into the U.S., with prescription, is legal under federal law, but NOT under Texas state law. You can go to Mexico, get a script for xanax, get the pills, walk back across, declare it to U.S. Customs, and be fine. But if you get pulled over by Texas authorities and the pills are found, you will almost certainly go to jail.

My wifes aunt needed Zocor (Simvastatin), it reduces your cholesterol. In the states she was paying $131/month, in Mexico she gets it for $21/month.
I'm not sure if its a controlled substance, like xanax, oxycontin, etc. Its probably not. I'm only referring to controlled substances.

Like anything else when I say do your homework, know whom you're buying from.
And don't drive through Texas with a controlled substance you bought in Mexico, regardless of whether or not you have a prescription and declared it to U.S. authorities.
