What's with all of this 16k VEN talk?
I know this is going to be a stupid question but, can I just buy a few VEN? I don't understand this whole "node" thing.

You have to understand the Ven node tiers.
Yes you can buy however much Ven you want if you believe in the project
Me and 14 other guys joined together to pool our Ven to reach node status

What are the downsides to getting a node? VEN is tied up and can’t sell on a whim?

Yup
If you ever drop your wallet below 6k you lose x node status and can never get it back

The X Node on-going seniority tracking has begun(block 5287109). We're happy to announce that an estimated 51.9% of 511M circulating supply are de facto locked up. Approx.7707 wallets will be granted X Node status, estimated 162M VET are being locked up by Authority and X Nodes.
Like Ive been saying the circulating supply after nodes are locked up will drastically change and by Vechain Foundations tweet will be cut nearly in half.

With ETH and BTC shitting the bed lately , everything is fools gold it seems . It may fall more and it may not . I got some left over VEN Ive been having on binance for about 5 days with a sell order at .0072 just incase it takes off .

VEN will dip a bit from a "sell the news" phenomenon but I doubt it will go back to where it was before if its true 50% supply went poof.

Well BTC has managed to pull its pants up just a little bit in the last couple of days, so I'm really weighing whether or not I want to pull out of it to put back into VEN. If there's no short-term gain to be had from doing so, I probably won't. I would figure VEN would still be pumping as of now if it were going to do it at all, but it doesn't appear to be. Thinking it might be best to hold off. I feel like the X node thing coming to an end today is going to cause it to retract again for a bit.

Eta: Nvm, was looking at eth pairing. Slightly more spread with btc.

You're still not wrong, though. It has held much steadier than most other alts. It's the likelihood (or not) of being able to pull any short-term gain out of it. If it starts a steady rise over the next couple of months, it could be a great point to buy-in. But of course, there's just no way to know.
