NEON wallet is the one you want. Don't keep it on Bittrex if you plan to hodl. You are not generating GAS which is essentially "dividends" on the amount of NEO you own.

this may seem really stupid but here goes....
i downloaded Neo for my mac. Chose New Wallet. It's showing me public/private keys, as well as 2 QR codes. What do I do with the QR codes? Do i need an app to scan them or something?

How do I buy NEO? I downloaded the NEO app, but do I have to buy it with Bittrex first? I've only dealt with Coinbase at this point.

Send Bitcoin to your Bittrex wallet, then you can buy NEO using that Bitcoin

go to GDAX
deposit your ETH from Coinbase (instant since they're the same company)
Click ETH/BTC from the dropdown at top left
Click Sell and enter the max amount of Ether you have
you now have BTC
Go to Bittrex and make account. Do basic verification
Go to Wallets
Find BTC
Click the blue Plus Sign
Generate a deposit address
Go back to GDAX and BTC/USD from dropdown at top left
Click Withdraw
Click BTC Address
Copy/paste the deposit address from Bittrex into the box, enter your amount
I have two-factor, so i had to enter a code they sent to my phone. you'll prob have to confirm after
Go back to Bittrex. On your wallets page, your pending deposit will appear in bottom right. You'll have to wait for 2 Confirmations to process before the funds are in your account.
Once it's in, go to Markets (top left) and click Neo.
Go to the Buy Neo box. Click MAX where it says units, then pick Last, Bid, or Ask price.
Click Buy Neo
Go through the confirmation stuff
Voila
Download NEON Wallet and transfer it there after your purchase clears so that you generate GAS as you hodl.

Ive downloaded the neon wallet...Where is my private key for neo on bittrex? Is it just my general API key or is there another key I am supposed to generate?

When you open Neon, click New Wallet. It will show you a public and private key. Take a picture, scan the QRs, and write down the keys, then store all that in a safe place, as you will never see the private key again.
Go to bittrex and send the Neon to your Public Key.
Voila
