Has anyone been successful in negotiating with a new employer to cover the unvested balance in your 401k if you're leaving before being fully vested, separate from a sign-on bonus? Obviously they wouldn't be able to put anything into the actual 401k, but they could potentially cut you a check for the unvested balance that one would be walking away from.

Everything is negotiable. If you can do it on RSUs then why not other monies.

Restricted Stock Unit.

What are you leaving on the table unvested? If it’s relatively small ~$5k or less, just ask for a sign on bonus or higher salary.

I got a sign on that covered the unvested balance but not the bonus I'm walking away from. Dream job though and something is better than nothing.

Why can't they put money into the 401k you will have with them?

Never seen it done before in practice though but I've never been a executive.

You and employer can put in $55,000 a year into a 401k if you include what the employer can put in.

Good point, didn't think of that. I'm terrible at negotiating salaries and sign-ons FWIW, especially if it's for a more exiting position

because most employers are lazy and if it's something they haven't done in the past, they'll probably just opt for something more common...bonus.
