re: LSUS Online MBA Reviews

I am starting the online LSUS MBA program in the fall... I received my B.B.A. from Valdosta State University in 2003, so it's definitely been a while since I have taken a college course! For my first course in 16 years (planning to just start with one accelerated course), which class and professor would be the easiest to help get me back into the swing of things? I am planning to concentrate/specialize in either Entrepreneurship or HR Management, so I thought of just starting with an elective course...

Ivory regarding the Org Behavior,
I am in the same boat, my academic advisor is counting off stuff that is ridiculous. I honestly wanted to take this class over any others as my bachelors focused a lot of behavior theory, but damn my academic advisor has made it hell.

Any recommendations on ISDS 705 professor?
Looks like Lind and Gherfal are the 2 options for Fall AP1 session.
I took Lind and as a person who has worked in data centers a long time, the material is old at times and the group project is BS. Mainly due to the lack of flexibility especially when half our team quit in the first week.
The video is very simple but the writing portion is brutal.

Is it possible to wait for AP2 and take Lin (different from Lind)? That’s who I’m taking. Word is that the class is fairly simple and no group project. Maybe try that route and look for another course to fill AP1.

Has anyone recently taken Lin for ISDS 705? Wondering if it's a course I can double up for AP2. Any suggestions for doubling up? Already taken FIN 701, ACCT 701 and MKT 701. Currently doing general MBA but considering changing to a Finance Concentration. I saw FIN 730 is available in AP2 with Choi.

Anyone who has taken/is currently taking ISDS 715 with Hennigan, is it just me or are his quizzes not what you expected? I study the slides but have only gotten Bs/Cs every quiz to date. Is there a strategy I’m missing? I searched the forum but there’s not much on this course yet. Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone.
Based off the feedback on Lind, I will probably go with Gherfal. He had decent reviews on ratemyprofessor.com for the ISDS 705 class.

Hey Kiki -- I'm in ISDS715 with ya. Agreed this is a very difficult course. I already hold my PMP certification and am struggling to crack 85% on the quizzes. Thank goodness he's a very easy grader on the assignments! I did notice that most of Hennigan's lectures have been made into flashcards on Quizlet and for this week, I am trying to use the flashcards as part of my strategy for the quiz.
Last semester was my 1st at LSUS and I had courses with Ambrosio and Shaughnessy. Both instructors who used every tool in their belt to make sure students succeed. This semester I have Kungu and Hennigan who are the absolute polar opposites. No video sessions, no practice quizzes, no real lectures...ugh. I'll be lucky to escape both classes with a B.

Rybo, thank you!! I appreciate the intel and thanks for making me feel better about my low quiz scores.
I feel bad on the Kungu thing, it sounds like I really misled people on here. I followed the advice here on Tigerdroppings and took Org Behavior from him and was just super glad he only required 500 words on his assignments compared to what I had heard about the other profs, where people said they spent 20 hours a week on MADM701! It was also my 1st semester at LSUS and now that I have Dr. Meeks, I see *exactly* what you mean with more engaged professors! Zero tools for success given by Kungu in comparison. Hang in there, you’ll make it through!

No worries on Kungu - he very well may be the best of what is available for this course. You are right though, the amount of work required on the papers is low. In fact, for the 1st assignment I was docked points for going over the 3-5 page suggestion, that was a first for me. 500 word posts and exactly three pages of work going forward for this guy!
What class do you have Meeks for?

I need some advice....
First time going to back to school in quite some time should I take FIN701 with Lynn Kendell or MADM760 with Erin McLaughlin?? This is for fall AP1 I work full time so I am just going to take 1.

Hi undkeith
I would recommend Kendall for FIN701. She does not do zoom sessions (or didn't when I took her) but she is engaged and very helpful. She provides a lot of feedback, guidance, and resources to help you understand the material. There is a weekly discussion/reply and a weekly test; sorry, I don't remember if there was a true mid-term/final. You are allowed to use a cheat sheet with formulas on tests, but you definitely need to know the concept behind the formulas too. She curves test grades and I think drops the lowest. Workload is not horrible.
Sorry, I don't have any info on MADM760 or McLaughlin.

Yes, no worries kikicub -I know all experiences are different. I agree with Rybo44 -he very well may be the best of what is available for this course.
I feel like the more effort I put in the more I get dinged - I may be overthinking the whole thing. Thanks for the pointers!

Undkeith - I recommend ECON701 with Fawaz. He is very engaged! Weekly zoom sessions, which are extremely helpful! Makes himself readily available via cell phone (he will walk you through a problem over the phone), email or forum post for any questions or problems. Weekly assignments/quizzes (5 chances to take each) and 1 weekly closed book exam. no midterm or final. Test are not terrible - part concept, part formula. The material feels overwhelming at times, but don't give up, he will help you succeed.

Hey Rybo, I have Meeks for MADM 760. He's really, really awesome. Night and day from Kungu or Hennigan. He provides screencast lectures where he even synthesizes the readings so you don't have to read, a LOT of videos, sends out frequent emails, grades his own work, and even joins group Zoom meetings where it turns out, he's a nice guy! Each week, you have a group slide deck where each person fills in 1 or 2 slides and then you meet via Zoom and submit a 3-5 min video of the group discussing something. Individually, you have a "skillbuilder" assignment due each week. It sounds like in the past, students have given feedback that the skillbuilders have been too intense, so he's trying out something new with us this semester where each question only has a 100 word requirement (x7 questions). The first one, I turned in 4,000 words but the last one, only 1,700 and got A's both assignments. He's a totally fair grader and doesn't penalize for grammar or anything, he really emphasizes connecting the dots and discussing personal experience (as a PM, you'll have a huge advantage). He also took into account student feedback about his quizzes, so we have quizzes but they're worth 0 points and for personal development only. You read Playing to Win, which is actually a good read. Solid course. It's definitely more time intensive than some others, but it's been valuable and it sounds like his teaching style is right up your alley. He's definitely a every tool in the belt teacher.

Ivory, ugh maybe I just lucked out with a better "academic coach." I'm truly sorry for your experience and am excited for all of us to move into the next semester (ha!). You will make it through, albeit one personality quiz at a time ;)

Is there a link somewhere to the text books most professors use?
Posted on 7/31/19 at 10:14 pm to straightwire
Straightwire - according to my advisor the MBA program has no textbooks to be purchased. The professors load the reading documents to Moodle.

Anyone in MADM-701 miserable?
I love the content, but have to honestly admit the academic advisor I am assigned grades like a rollercoaster. Taking points off for not exceeding the page counts, but the next paper going over a page deduction for not being under the maximum. There are numerous other oddities but am curious if anyone on here is in the class this term.
For those taking the class it is a great class for your managerial knowledge if you aren't a seasoned professional.
