This is what I think. Domestic auto companies can raise prices 10% just because they can and they're cheaper than foreign cars with tariffs.
That's what GP did with lumber and plywood prices in2018 when tariffs were applied to Canadian building products.
And, Trump has said prices will probably go up.

I need to read up on this. I believe a majority of the cars owned by Americans are assembled in the US. I always thought that the percentage of the car’s components that were imported was how they defined how “imported” a car was. The final assembly point is obviously an important factor too but it’s kind of arbitrary if that’s the only consideration.

A lot of Japanese cars are manufactured in the US, but not even close to all. Honda said today their revenues could potentially drop 40%.

And why? For what reason?

My Honda was made in Canada.

It is. I think this was always the rub with the 2007+ Toyota Tundra vs domestic half ton trucks. Toyota used to advertise their truck was more American than the F150 or Silverado.

This site would be burning to the ground if Biden tried to pull this bullshite.

Then you don't understand the board. At all.

Reagan did the same thing through quotas in 1980. It has produced over 100K... 150K included supporting jobs. Car prices dropped. Quotas removed.

How did that work? You see it wasn't just a straight up tariff and oh well. It was the policies attached to it. Build here and avoid it. They did.

Same thing here. There will be no trade war. They will simply invest enough into the USA that creates jobs and avoid the tariffs.

Another example is LG and Samsung who continues to expand here in the USA even though the tariffs have been removed.

As the result of tariff/quotas placed by Reagan in 1980. Without that act, 150K jobs would not be here.

BTW.. Reagan removed them after they complied.

Billions of dollars lost, taxing consumers, for 150k jobs? And you're bragging about that?

This is from your favorite economist Oren Cass.

"The truth, however, is not so clear. Even the deal’s ardent supporters acknowledge that it resulted in a decade of high auto prices for American car-buyers. “[VER] raised prices for consumers by an average of 8%, costing American consumers an additional $5.1 billion,” American Compass wrote in 2022. "

The Japanese would have eventually moved some production to the US without the Reagan quotas. Everyone knew this.
