Job seeking question: directly contacting a company

In a nutshell, I work for a large company in a fairly niche role. There’s a small firm in my City that specializes in what I do. In checking out their website and LinkedIn, there’s no ‘Career’ section, so any correspondence would go directly to someone.
Is it as simple as sending an email and resume and a ‘hey I’m interested if you’re hiring’ type of email? I have a pretty good resume, and it matches with what I do, and I’d like to be in a smaller firm versus a large corporation (pros/cons aside)
Good idea? Bad idea? Anyone done something similar? Thoughts?

I don't see how it would be a bad idea.

I’d do that and just ask if there are any current or future opportunities to provide your skills.

I’m thinking if I sent an email, to keep it fairly high level. I’d be wanting to gauge interest and potentially start a conversation to maybe lead to an interview down the road, instead of listing out accomplishments and trying to sell myself through a single email. That may seem too aggressive and needy
Right approach?
Right approach?

I would call the office and find out who to send it to. I would also try to talk to that persons before sending. Nothing wrong with just sending it on but I’d call to try and up my chances of earning an interview/call.

Phone conversation only.

What’s the worse that can happen? You definitely won’t get the job if you don’t do anything.

I landed my current job that way. They were seeking a lesser position but I called them and sent a resume and setup a meeting to see if they were looking for anything else. Worked out great as I received a very competitive offer.

Landed my 1st job out of college that way. Was a smaller start up that looked neat, sent an email and had a phone interview the next day.
