How to make 100k a year?
Just looking for some advice. I’m stuck in a shitty job. I’m 32 years old. Make 50k a year. Have a degree in political science. The company I’m with has no room for advancement. I’m miserable. I love paycheck to paycheck. I just want a job with some room for advancement and growth. Scared I’m going to be like this forever. I go on job boards and don’t know where to begin. Any ideas on a career path? Going back to school is not an option because of my mortgage.

What’s your degree? How long have you owned the house? Relationship status? There are ways to lower your monthly costs, but I imagine it depends on what you feel is worth changing in your life.

Marry someone who also makes 50k a year.

Political science. I have owned the house for a year. Mortgage is 1400. The thing is I hate my job the number one reason is there is no room for advancement and I feel like I reached my ceiling at 32. I have applied for a few sales jobs on the internet but no response because I don’t have experience in sales. My current job is in construction. I work for a mom and pop company that actually does really well in its field the problem is all the top positions are occupied by young family members.

I used to be in your shoes. I made between $24,000-$45,000 working full time from the time I got out of LSU with a fricking humanities degree until this year when I decided to FINALLY take a leap of faith while holding my nose and went out on my own. I am in the financial services industry and always worked for someone else, juggling my schedule around their mandated schedule, getting sick often from stress and burn out. I went from job to job thinking something was wrong with me. Once I went out on my own and started working for myself my stress level is much lower, I don't think burn out is even possible at this point, and as long as I continue on the pace I've been at I'm on track to gross $120,000-$140,000 a year. I also work half as much as I did before.

Maybe you just need to start something yourself instead of continuing to fund someone else's lifestyle.

50k isn't bad for a poli sci degree that's not a PhD.

Do you have an income problem or a spending problem?

1. If your mortgage is upwards of 1,050 you bought too much house.
2. Do you have a car note?
3. Do you have credit card debt?
4. Do you have student loans?

These factors will severely limit wealth building and cause you to live paycheck to paycheck.
Many are surprised when a higher income doesn't solve their financial problems.

ETA: with a $1,400 mortgage you're spending at least 40% of your net pay on housing. That's simply too much.

That’s great that you were able to take a leap of faith like that. I’m glad it worked out for you. Unfortunately for me I don’t know what field I could take a leap into.

What specifically are you doing at this construction company? How long have you worked there?

You need either a side hustle or get into sales.

And sales is something you're born to.

You can try to go slow with something like real estate, but this may require a significant lifestyle adjustment.

Good luck.

Are you knowledgeable in construction do's and don'ts? You could start your own construction company and have others work for you. Maybe go it alone on small, one-man jobs at first until you get on solid footing. Invest your earnings into your business until you are able to hire one employee to help you. Do that for another year or so as you re-invest the extra income provided by having an extra man (getting more jobs done in the same amount of time) as though it was still only you. Once you grow some more, hire more until you're running for Governor.

Haha the governor part made me laugh. I really don’t k now too much about construction. My job pertains along the lines of managing production of the product and the employees. I hate being a manager. I hate being in charge of people’s actions. It’s like babysitting.

I could shoot myself for getting a poli sci degree. I had a scholarship and a prime opportunity to take advantage of a good education.

Well, that goes back to the old Henry Ford axiom, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.”

With little debt, maybe you can find some like-minded folks and develop a trailer park or something smallish like that to get started - something that can scale.

Or, maybe do some political consulting/campaign work during political season - maybe get on with a local polling or political research firm as a side gig?

Just spitballing - but if you're willing to put in the time, should be something out there for you - Americans, generally, are lazy as frick - must be some work out there that is currently going undone, right?

Well if you manage the production of construction products now then perhaps you should consider a career in construction sales. You already have an idea of how to produce quality materials, you could use that knowledge to convince a prospect that what you're selling is better than anything else on the market. Believe me, a little bit of knowledge-induced confidence in your voice goes a very long way when trying to close a deal.

career in construction sales.
That or industrial sales is a good recommendation imo. You won't get the job replying to online postings since you lack experience. Start developing relationships with your suppliers and vendors. It's a process. You likely won't get there in a month or two. It'll take some time.
