Being home poor is one of the least desirable financial outcomes one can be straddled with. Figure out what you think you can truly afford and then shave 50-100K off the purchase price. I'm a big believer in conservatism when is comes to identifying a house. This also means you should not tour houses in the upper strata...it can be difficult to move back down in your budget once you see what that extra 100K+ gets you.

100% agree. Literally makes one resent their home and resent any other spending that comes up.
