Can you trade your stock for a Rolex watch?
Posted on 9/15/21 at 3:53 pm to Chuckiee
I can sell my watch and receive dollars which can then be used to purchase a Rolex. I imagine if I was broker or market maker I could exchange stock for a Rolex but I’m not either.

No but his point is that a stock is still more than just a blockchhain or smart contract. It's the value of an entity providing products or services.

I genuinely don’t think that is his point
I digress

Just because you don't agree with why something has value does that mean it doesn't?

Right but I know the value of a dollar is a dollar. Yeah inflation and deflation can erode or increase my purchasing power via the dollar. How do you value HEX?

You can sell HEX, BTC, apple stock, crack rock as well and receive cash to buy a Rolex also

I could sell my liquid Hex right now and go buy a Rolex or a House. I don’t understand the gap in this thinking? We have continuously watched people dump millions of dollars worth of Hex and it is being bought up just as quickly as it’s dumped. The argument that there is no liquidity in Hex has sailed a long time ago.

I’m glad we finally reached the ultimate question. My apologizes for taking the long way to get there.

The market values it. What people are willing to buy or sell it at.
Just like your rolex watch.

Well and that's a fair point.
One issue I have with these discussions is we seem to turn to analogies to make our points too frequently. Then we just end up arguing the validity or appropriateness of the analogy rather than the original issue. But I digress...

My concern is not with liquidity my concern is the storing or protection from an erosion of value.
Posted on 9/15/21 at 4:02 pm to Lickitty Split
Good luck with the US dollar! Talk about erosion or value.

I think you just got caught up in what is and isn’t a currency. Almost all of crypto isn’t a currency in the form of what we think compared to the dollar, but that doesn’t mean that it has no value or that people will not invest in it.

I understand a thing is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. When it comes to stocks, it gets its value from multiple of its earnings and profits extended over several years. It could also be that the company will return a certain dividend over the next several years and so the stock has that value to it that will remain with it. Basically it’s based on tangible things that have some variables contingent on the overall demand of what the company is providing or generating.
With HEX it just seems to be whatever someone is willing to pay for it. It seems like a flimsy or fragile thing that could easily dissolve in a panic.

Well with Apple, you're betting on them continuing to churn out cool useful quality shite year after year, thus perpetuating demand for their products.
With hex, you're betting on the ecosystem continuing to provide reliable high yield long term savings (cd), thus perpetuating demand for the product.

I love all y'all even if you disagree with everything we discussed today. I don't have enemies in real life and I don't want them here.
Hope y'all have a great evening!

Please tell that to RKT, they make money hand over fist and the stock sucks. Any investment you make comes with risks. Buying into a company does not guarantee a profit, even if that company is awesome. Stocks/crypto all the same.
