Unless you are an engineer, most people from LSU will struggle to get into top b-schools unless they crush the GMAT, which is definitely possible.
I agree with this. I went to LSU and go to what I think is a good b-school. To your point, I did well on the GMAT and didn't stay at LSU for an engineering masters. The GMAT was important, but getting away from LSU helped me the most. MSF at Vanderbilt is a good suggestion.

Is having an MBA from LSU not that highly regarded? Its in the top 100 (61) in the current rankings. Did I miss something?

So how do you put distance between LSU and B-School? Work experience? If so how many years is a safe number? At what level of B-School ranking does a degree from LSU start to matter? Top 5? Does it affect full time and part time time programs equally?

When an MBA is ranked it's ranked in full time, part time and etc.

I meant does having a degree from LSU affect full time applicants differently from part time? As in, is the prestige of your undergrad or grad school more important for full time MBA programs?

I don't think so, as long as you have a good gpa and good GMAT who can hold you back? Now I have heard some admissions people say that it can be hard for someone to get into LSU MBA with another LSU degree. That's usually the thoughts across the board but who knows with some.

Thanks again for input. What is your career/background if you don't mind me asking?
Just finished my MBA. Working in a niche consulting field, not MBB but top tier in this specific niche. Choose the school that I attended based on the investment banks and consulting firms that recruited on campus and that have significant alumni in-place.
I will say that MBA/MSF rankings aren't always everything. Go to the school that offers the best return (scholarships, jobs, alumni network). No school can guarantee placement, but the school that you choose should have alumni to reach out to in position you would like to work.
I will also add, don't just go to grad school to figure things out more. Know what you want out of the program you enter. If you are not sure, then your time is better spent networking everyday.

Mr magoo,
If you don't mind me asking, is LSU alumni network really that terrible? Even on the business side?

Maybe I should rephrase that statement. When I graduated from LSU, the career management center and alumni network were not developed to their full capabilities. Not much support as far as finding a job and no website to go to for searching for alumni. I am not sure what LSU has done since I left.
As an example,I went to a private school for my MBA. At my school I had multiple layers of help in finding an internship and full-time job. The career management center was constantly reaching out to employers and alumni were always on campus trying to help get students into their firms. The alumni database was constantly updated, so you knew which firms people were currently working for and they were all willing to meet with you for a coffee/lunch. In addition, faculty would do everything possible to help you get in contact with people in the profession you wanted to work. I personally never experienced that type of help from LSU.
Take what I have to say with a grain of salt. Everyone has a different take on things. Maybe you are reaching out to the few people in IB or consulting and getting interviews.

would you recommend a master's in engineering or MBA? and would you do it immediately after undergrad or get work experience first?
I appreciate this thread. tia

Interesting question. First off, i would never recommend an MBA directly out of undergrad. Get at least 2 years of experience before MBA.
The MS in engineering is a great compliment to have, however only get one if you want to do technical engineering for 3-5 years. Also, as I recommended in other post, go to the school that offers the best scholarships. I know in this area Rice, UT, A&M have great programs and place well for oil and gas. If something else is your thing (tech) look at other programs. If your trying to use the MS to get into a business field, it can be done, but takes a lot of networking and spinning your story well.
The MS will make your resume look great, but is not needed for business. Will make you much more competitive for b-school application though.

Mr. Magoo,
I had only asked because I had currently switched from the PMBA to the Online MBA at LSU because of my job. With the oil and gas explosion in West Texas I had taken some what of a promotion to go. My question is, what is the presception on this switch? Do others really look down on an online MBA? Just to remind you I had gained admissions to UNC, LSU, and Tulane. I just need to complete my last year, and with the online program now being offered will it affect me? Does the transcript show online degree?

Plus I had not heard anything bad about the Alumni on the MBA level, but one of the reasons I did choose LSU for my MBA is because I also wanted to be an official TIGER, and rankings usually indicate that MBA alumni are in high places which these current rankings place LSU 61 in the nation. Not bad in my book.

There isn't a formula, but I think a MSF or ME from a top 20 or 30 school is one way to help offset an LSU undergrad.
Work experience is much more about quality than quantity. The problem is the Princeton grad is getting the job with McKinsey out of undergrad. So undergrad school is double counted somewhat in MBA admissions.
I don't think LSU is as big of an issue at programs like Ross, McCombs, Owen, etc, but I only have first-hand experience with admissions at Owen.
I don't know much about part-time MBA admissions so I can't comment on how it compares to full-time programs.
If you boil it down, MBA programs want students with the highest potential for success. In other words, they want the most employable students. Generally, employers prefer a Yale grad over an LSU grad. So convincing a b-school to let an LSU grad into the club isn't much different than convincing BCG or Goldman Sachs to take an LSU grad.

The answer depends on who you ask. If LSU football was #61, would it be highly regarded? The big issue I saw with LSU is that many alums don't think highly of the MBA program.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I took the GMAT today and got a 650. It seemed much easier than the practice tests I took but my score does not reflect that. 90th percentile in verbal and 48 in quantitative. I dont know what happened in the math section. I tutor math for high schoolers and never have any issue with it.
Overall, I think the kaplan program was pretty good and I think it prepared me.

The problem the MBA program has is too many students that aren't willing to leave Louisiana and/or have bad grades coupled with no work experience.

You got a 48 on quant or a 48th percentile? The percentiles on the quant section get f*cked up by all of the Indians/Chinamen who take the test and score 50+ on that section. I don't think it is even possible to get 99th %ile on the quant for this reason; the highest you can get is 98th.
I scored 3 pts. higher on quant than I did on verbal (48 v. 45), but my verbal %ile was much higher.

48th percentile
according to my unofficial sheet. I got a 39 on quant and a 40 on verbal.
