Filing Return for Parent that Passed Away

Mom passed mid January last year 2022, not even sure she got SS check that month, hasn't owed any taxes in a decade since she sold some mineral rights. Estate was distributed to family, taxes should have been paid for that. Property taxes taken care of by me.
I forgot about filing tax return, figure I will get a "letter" from the IRS if anything needs to be done.
Should I be worried?

She gets a full standard deduction for 2022 so unless she made over $12,950 in the year, then no. As long as the estate taxes got taken care of you should be alright.

The penalty is 1/2% a month right? I would't sweat it, send something in at some point but that's all you need to do.

You should be fine doing this. Mark it final return
ETA: I would include a death certificate.

Did you file a rerun for 2021 for her?
We had a similar situation with a January death. Filed a return for the deceased for that last full year of life with indication they were deceased. He had a small amount of income the January he died but it was not enough to meet the minimum to have to file that next year, and we didn’t.

Sorry for your loss. But if she had any income you would need to file.
quote:
In general, file and prepare the final individual income tax return of a deceased person the same way you would if the person were alive. Report all income up to the date of death and claim all eligible credits and deductions.
If the deceased had not filed individual income tax returns for the years prior to the year of their death, you may have to file.
It's your responsibility to pay any balance due and to submit a claim if there's a refund.
quote:
To verify non-filing status and certain income documents of the deceased from the IRS, submit Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return. Before submitting any information request, see the request deceased person's information.
