I was going to post something very similar to what LSUFanHouston posted.

To answer your original question; It isn't a negative thing. However it might not help much especially with the bigger companies. Networking may help with the bigger companies if you find the right people.(like through linkedin)

A tactic I'll use in networking is to figure out who I want to find within a company on linkedin then cross reference with Facebook to see if we share any connections.

Has that worked? I've had folks do that to me, and it kind of annoyed me.

I'm still holding out hope you hire me for something.

BigLaw is highway robbery, man. I like to think I'm second in line but they look down on my academic achievements at her firm.

She has definitely put you on the "One of the smartest people we have met" list, so that is something to be proud of. If she was in a section that could use your chemical/engineering mind and had any pull, she would recommend you as an expert witness.

In fact, you should see if you could get into that. They get paid fat stacks.

I've been pretty close to starting this same thread.

Do you ask to speak to he owner/manager/whatever? Or just drop it off with the secretary?

don't I need to be an expert on something for that? My wife had a big case with a chemist expert witness. He did quite well off that trial, but he was an expert on chromium poisoning.
I'll stick to my general engineering path. It's gotten me this far! That, and my good looks of course.

To brab and all, don't just drop it off with the secretary. Gauranted trash can. Try to at least find out the name of the person that should see it. If not the name, then the title of that person.

Maybe in pseudo-retirement someone might mistake you for an expert.

And I agree, find someone with skin in the game for the resume. I don't trust anyone to do anything beyond the bare minimum, and no admin assistant is going to walk your resume up to the guy who needs to see it. Or, they might, but if he's out the office, that's the end of it, no hunting will occur.

Do a little research and ask to speak to a manager. Have a name.

Leaving it with secretary will probably result in round file treatment.

Don't have people walk in ever but I get random resumes emailed to me all the time. I'll review resume and look the person up online. If everything seems normal I'll always pass on to hiring manager or HR. Work in comm real estate.

What's your job now? Trying to get a job for an operator or service company?

If you're going for an operator, Lafayette is a pretty tough place at the moment.. Stone just laid people off and they were one of the bigger oil companies. There are a few smaller ones you could try.. Marlin, badger, shoreline maybe, Jp oil.

Well if you know about it then the person who did it was an idiot. Don't ever let someone know you stalked them down online. You just use it to know some information about the person you're going to try and get to know. Maybe 5 years after you get hired let them know.

I interview a lot of folks. I often see on linkedin that "so-and-so viewed your profile", and it may be someone that I will be interviewing in the next couple of days. That doesn't bother me. If anything, I am glad they are doing their homework.
But I've had friends email me saying that some guy would like to meet me for some networking (and sometimes, it is a friend of their friend on facebook!). My friends were a little annoyed by it, and I didn't appreciate it. I didn't review their resumes.

my current role is more deep water completions/ workovers/sand control. when things were booming i covered some land and shelf work.. field engineer...

I'm trying to move to an operator. I am looking for a smaller one. I will excel at a smaller one vs a big one where I am just part of a group of engineers on a project. That would be fun but I wouldn't excel as much.

I plan on visiting marlin, badger, and jp oil.

Since you are not applying for a specific position I would include a Letter/Notice of Intent with your resume.

You never know, these good ol boy companies in Lafayette may be willing to hire a production engineer with service experience even in a major downturn like now.

Who is in the offices of Tana Exploration, Arena Offshore, and Enven? Any engineers or just field superintendents?
