I have had a discovery card for about 6 months now. I use it for gas and lunch and pay it off every month in full. Well they just sent me an email saying the increased my limit from 15,500 to 17,000. The weird thing is I didn't ask for it and don't need it. Is this something they typically do? I got a capital one credit card when I was 18 and then this one 8 years later. Never had this happen with capital one so I'm not sure if this is normal, a scam email, or a promo temp offer.

The email says nothing about it being a temporary increase.

Normal. They periodically review accounts and run a soft credit report. Amex does it once or twice a year in seemingly random amounts.

Credit card companies do this sort of thing all the time. A Citibank card I've had for about 20 years started out with a limit of $1000 and now is around $34000, all at their initiative. I have no idea why I would put that much on a credit card, but apparently Citi thinks I might want to one day.

This is normal. Financial institutions can increase or decrease your credit limit at any time. This applies to HELOCs too. This is why it's a bad idea to only depend on credit cards/HELOC for your emergency fund.
