Thanks guys. I am 21 so I don't want to have too many cards, but reading this thread about how great AMEX is I figured I would ask if I should consider it.

On the CVS gift card rack the terms and conditions imply that VRs can be bought with credit while those other ones cannot. If the denial isn't store specific manager decisions, it may be worth it to calmly point this out.
The terms can be found in white text at the top of the rack.

I would hold off apply to Amex until you score is higher

Speaking of this..
We will be taking out a home equity loan soon for an addition on the house (hopefully the penfed 3.99) and lately the wife and I have been looking into the amex blue cash preferred. Other than our home loan and a chase credit card (0 balance, 5k limit) we have no open lines of credit anywhere and last month I looked on credit karma and it said I had a 754 score.
Is it safe to apply for a card now when in possibly a month or so I'll be applying for a loan too? Or would it be best to wait.

Just bought VR with my credit card at CVS. Didn't get a blink.

Thanks for the advice. I just paid off my truck this month, and besides from carrying over a small balance (15%) each month on my credit cards, I hope to see it rise steadily.
Again guys, thanks so much for all the advice.

how reliable are pre-approval links on credit card websites?

I would wait until after you're approved for your home equity loan if you are planning on applying within the next 6 months... If it will be longer go ahead and go for it

My understanding is that those come because they have demographic info on you that fits the criteria of the card.
As for pre selected mailed offers with an invitation code, I read that those are similar, but any time I have gotten an invitation code the application process has been a cake walk.
Targeted offers are usually just that, because they want you, but nothing is "guaranteed" approval. For example, if I applied for five credit cards and then got a targeted offer, they may not want to extend credit to me at that time, but you're probably in good shape 3-6 months later for that card/bank.

Always get any loan before you apply for cards. People can really screw themselves, ie, applying for a mortgage, getting a few cards to 'buy new furniture' and getting a horrible mortgage rate after the fact.
Never apply for CCs if you are planning on making a big purchase involving bank loans soon.

There are a couple CVS stores about 30 minutes away that I am going to try this weekend.

If these are your best bets for VR's then it's really only practical to buy the beans when trying to meet minimum spends/intro bonuses. Unless you're using a card that gives back more than 1x for the purchases at a drugstore.

Agreed. Anything past that is getting burned up in gas. Better off going back to the closer stores and calmly try to smooth operate your way into a purchase. Not to mention that the cashier may not have known what they're talking about.

I don't have it but I believe there is a thread on Flytertalk about it.

Inspiration post (hopefully): went ahead and booked two economy (ya ya) tickets to Barcelona for six days over this coming new years. Killed two birds with one stone.
Details: MSY to IAD on Dec. 24th to visit fiance family in DC. Leave IAD to Barcelona on Dec. 27th, come back on the 3rd.
Total cost was $254. Booked with Bsarclays so will use 25,000 points, leaving me on the hook for $4, cost of a beer at the bar.
Would love more time as always (Do i look European?) But I'm happy.

Long flights make me cranky (I can't sleep sitting up), so I always try to get away at least two weeks when I jump the pond. That said, I'm still jealous

I can't sleep either but I'm two for two without it messing me up (Athens and New Delhi). I get too excited (like a child
) for it to affect me so far, but I'm 28 and will surely change. I'd always love more time as well but I got to burn 'em, points worth nothing in my accounts.
Have some club access passes too. Hopefully one has showers.

Good deal!

So you booked the flights with only Barclays...which Barclays? Have you done anything as far as hotels?
Posted on 2/13/14 at 9:24 am to cmlsu
Booked reward by transferring UR points to United. Will fly Lufthansa across the ocean.
Used the Barclay's card to pay the taxes so I could redeem my points to take care of that.
Just booked the flight last night, have to look into hotels now. Probably will pay some out of pocket here due to all the cards I've gotten and wanting to save some of the hotel cards for honeymoon in 2015, but we'll see.
My favorite part of this is my stopover at Dulles to see the in-laws on the same award ticket. Saves us a bundle.
