Welcome back to the family! :geauxtigers:

well, a couple of questions come into play...
how much money would you save in gas annually?
what do you like to do in your spare time...i.e. do you needd a truck or would you miss your truck if you get rid of it?....
Well I project I will spend close to $3,800 a year on gas with my commute. Depending on the car I choose, will determine the amount of savings. I would absolutely miss my truck, but I don't need it.
Considering trading in my truck
Posted by zbeaux13 on 2/11/14 at 10:17 pm
I currently own a 2011 Chevy Silverado Z71. Truck has 49k miles on it and is in great condition. Current job has me not maximizing the trucks abilities (I don't off road anymore and no hauling)
My question is, do I keep the truck and continue to burn money with gas, or trade it in for a car/hybrid SUV? I want to keep the truck, but not sure it is the smartest financial decision at the moment. Just an FYI, I own the truck out right.
Thanks for the help and any recommendations on a vehicle to transition too.

I would hold off apply to Amex until you score is higher
Thanks for the advice. I just paid off my truck this month, and besides from carrying over a small balance (15%) each month on my credit cards, I hope to see it rise steadily.
Again guys, thanks so much for all the advice.

Thanks guys. I am 21 so I don't want to have too many cards, but reading this thread about how great AMEX is I figured I would ask if I should consider it.
Ok, thank you for the advice
Whats the ideal number of cards to have open?

Sorry if this question is out of place. I currently have a Chase Freedom card and an Amazon card (just beginning to earn credit). My credit score is 689 but my income is around $35k. Should I close the two other accounts and begin looking at an entry level AMEX?

I see. So you basically lost any potential profits in the market with what was withheld.
Can that be a good thing some years when the market is down?

I got a big ole refund too. I'm severely annoyed.
Admittedly being new to all of this, why are you annoyed on getting money back? Pure curiosity question.

You can start by reading this blog post from Mark Cuban that I think is pretty useful.

Very interesting read. I purchased the book Cuban referenced in the article. It appears to me that the market is full of people who buy stocks just because other people are buying them. I guess the key to selecting stocks is to find a way to objectively discover the quality of a company.
Interesting stuff, don't want to miss the boat with a stock, however, I don't want to be in the boat when it sinks.

Y'all have been more than helpful, thank you very much.
Another update is that my first $5k deposit into the Roth IRA will retroactively go towards 2013. Meaning I can (hopefully) hit $5,500 before the end of the year.
I got some clarification and the $5,500 limit only applies to new deposits to the account. Being 21 years old, I am hopeful that it will compound for years to come.
I also did a bit of research on day trading, and my initial thought is it is extremely risky. I'm not sure I want to gamble with a considerable about of money trading stocks. How much $ do y'all usually allocate for riskier investments?
Thanks again for helping me out

You realize you only have $500 left to reach the yearly maximum?
ETA: If you were able to set the $5k as a 2013 contribution you are ok.
That is my understanding. Does the amount that is reinvested within the account count towards the $5500 max?

Thank you sir!
I worked throughout college and always set some aside. Parents gave me a financial gift at graduation, which is what made my emergency fund. I've been very lucky and want to continue being financially responsible. While I am not making a ton of money at the moment, I feel making a monthly deposit in the Roth IRA is very important.

Just an update: Went ahead and opened a Roth IRA. Started small with $5k in the account. Putting $100 in per month.
Strongly considering adding blue chips in the future.
Thanks for everyone's assistance.

Thanks for the responses fellas! Thinking I will split what I have set aside to invest between a 401k and a few different blue chips.
Any thoughts on if I should keep the high yield account I already have? It's not producing anything currently.

New to investing

Good evening folks, new guy here just wanted to introduce myself before I asked for some knowledge and insight. Hope everyone is having a good week so far!
I have recently graduated from LSU and I am looking to start building my stock portfolio. Besides from my savings, I have a small amount invested in a franklin high yield account. I believe the time is right to start expanding my investments.
Since I admittedly do not have an abundance of knowledge in this area, I'm turning to y'all for some suggestions. Any advice or pointers you could offer about what are a few good companies to begin my portfolio with would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
