Gracias.
I will say I am torn on the switch.
5000 in loads would take 2/3 trips at Target. With Arrival+ that's $100 a month.
With Serve, I can do the whole 5X office supplies for GCs and then go to a little machine where no one bothers me and load $200 GCs. Takes more trips, but theoretically I'd net up $323 valuing Chase UR at 2 cents a point.
However, I'm more likely to do $5000 in Target loads with a CC (I think). UGH
My mind says switch but my heart says no.
I think just 8 Office Supply $200 GCs nets me over $100. I think I'll stay put...for now.

Yeah. See I held off on the bluebird due to time constraints, so this allows me to get some easy manufactured spend in since target is literally 0.2 miles from my house. Hopefully between this, $2,000 a month regular spend, and the sign up bonus, I'll have over $2,000 in Barclay's points to offset a lot of resort costs. I will probably set up my wife one as well and double the fun.

Very nice. I know Buckeye was planning an African safari trip. Care to share the details? It's not a common trip blogged about and one reason is I'd assume that is due to lack of major hotel brands in much of the area.
Sorry I never got back to you yet. Life gets busy.
My itinerary changed just a little bit due to time constraints. Going to Kenya now instead of Victoria Falls. But here is the breakdown:
*BTR-IAH-YYZ-IST (took this route to get to Istanbul sooner): Stay in Istanbul for a day
*IST-CAI: Stay in Cairo for a day
*CAI-ADD-NBO
All that came out to 80,000 miles pp through United to avoid fuel surcharges. That is all in business class (because they dont have first class on those flights) except for BTR-IAH and ADD-NBO.
Doing a 3 day safari either at Maasai Mara (more than likely this option) or Serengeti.
Fly from NBO to AUH (using AA miles on Etihad once again to avoid the fuel charge) and spend 4 nights between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. I'll use the Hyatt card for 2 free nights at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas and then use my Hilton weekend certificate and points for 2 nights at Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah.
Then fly from AUH direct to DFW (once again using AA miles on Etihad).
Thats the gist. You have to call to book AA miles on Etihad, so I had to pay that phone booking fee. Overall, though, I feel pretty good about how low the cost will be for the places I'll get to go.

Also got two new cards. The AMEX Platinum for Ameriprise in order to avoid the $450 annual fee. Still get 25,000 points and all of the other benefits (airline credits, lounge access, etc.) Also, there is no fee for the additional cards (I think it is $175 on the regular platinum). That means the other person can get global entry along with the main person. Also, I read that getting this version may not count toward your one time lifetime bonus on the card from AMEX. Anyway, happy with that card.
The other card with the Citi AT&T Access Plus card. Wanted a new phone, so couldn't pass up that $650 phone credit.

Is this bluebird thing still working? I never knew about it until the other day reading Million Miles blog. Is this Redcard something similar? Am I missing out on a lot of points?

First off, you missed page 9 or something. Where the hell you been?
The answer is yes, no, maybe.
If you got a target nearby, I'd go with Redbird first.
If you have a business card from Chase or other means of 5X points to buy giftcards, I'd consider Bluebird/Serve.
Now that Serve doesn't have online CC loads, I'm not sure if it has any characteristics > Bluebird besides maybe some of those Amex deals they push through it.
Got to account for your travel time, gas and such. I think having one of these cards is a must though because if say, I'm in a pitch and need to create some points in a hurry, this is how I do it.

From what I understand, bluebird is hit or miss depending on whether your Walmart allows you to load with a gift card. The Redcard is going to be good as long as the cc load lasts. Right now it is direct load with cc ($5,000 a month possible; $2,500 a day; $1000 a transaction) . Broken down, that could be 120,000 Barclay's or 60,000 chase points a year. If you run two ssn, you can obviously double that. You can then either transfer the funds back to your bank account or pays bills with it.

That's a lot of travel in a small window.
You having kids soon? Stuff like this makes me wish I was European or Aussie with all that vacation time. Its annoying to see people HAVE to take such measures just to travel, but good for you that you are doing it.
I have to say, your itinerary would terrify a lot of people with Istanbul having some turmoil, Cairo no explanation needed and Kenya with those Al Shabab guys.
Kudos to you.
Was it routing that made you choose Kenya over the other options like Tanzania/Botswana, etc etc? I've kinda always wanted to say I've been to Zanzibar!

I probably skimmed some pages...
Target a few miles away, not the most convenient thing but can be done. I have the united visa but not business.

Knowing my luck I'll get $5000 in target cards or whatever the hell these are and not be able to use them right
I think I'll stick to the regular spending. I would love to earn 60k more but it seems like a lot of work and can be risky. Thanks

My trip got cut short for a few reasons. One is that I am hoping to start my PhD shortly after.
And yeah I know a lot of those places could be safer, but I have always been of the mindset that if you stick to the heavy touristy areas then you're fine. So many of those countries rely on tourism dollars. They won't let their tourist areas be too unsafe.
Routing definitely played a major roll. Because of my short window, I would have lost over a day going to Victoria Falls. Plus getting to Abu Dhabi was going to be a hassle from LVI.
But I'm packing as much as I can in as little time as I can lol

We're looking at tours once we get in Africa. All of the African continent flights are included. Just have to get there and back.

Ya Vic Falls routing is a nightmare if you try to get there from anywhere not named South Africa it seems.
Ya I wouldn't worry about it too much either. Odds are low. Just noticed a trend.

If simplicity is your game the Redcard from Target is for you.
Once you get the permanent card mailed to you, you just go to Target with it and your CC, say "I want to load $1,000 Please" at the register. Swipe the Redcard, swipe the CC, and done.

Then what do you do with the money on your redcard?

Which if someone is looking for a great card to use with the redcard, the discover it miles card is great because they double your miles your first year. So you could potentially get 180,000 in redemption for the same spend.

I wish I had more time to do a tour like this. Unfortunately time isn't my friend. There are some great tours that go up or down east Africa that look amazing.
