I know there is an entire Will Cover linked topic on this, but I am just seeing if I can get a specific answer. I'm about to buy a used minivan (2015-2016, preferably Honda). Most of them seem to run somewhere between 25-28k. Does anyone know how much I can expect to negotiate off these prices or are they harder to negotiate much on?

Thanks in advance!

In my limited experience when we bought our Odyssey, dealers wouldn't budge on used prices because they are in such high demand. We ended up going new (2015) because the rebates made the prices only 2-3K apart vs slightly used.

Very little, but ask about doc, title, and misc. fees first.

Dealers are OOC with this crap.

There was a recent thread about this new tactic where the used car dealers are setting the prices as low as they feel it should be and not really coming off of that price.

Most sales guys on here are not going to tell ALL the truth and they do not always know- depending on how long they have been selling at a dealership

This is what you need to know- On a dealers lot most cars have a 4-5K margin and they rarely like to make less than 2K- they will go 1K above their cost if unit has been on the lost 120 days.

IF on a non dealer reputable used lot- then they paid auction or broker price- which is normally slightly lower than the BLACK BOOK lowest trade amount

Shady used car lots- you should not even be shopping there

e.g. if a dealer has a car for 28K on his lot he likely gave around 23K on trade - if he paid less he will usually list it for less unless it is a car under heavy demand

I just went through this and it was a nightmare. One salesman finally set me straight and basically said “look, we already know you have checked everything available vehicle within 250 miles, compared it everywhere, seen the carfax, priced it on kbb, etc etc and you wouldn’t even be talking to us right now if you thought another vehicle was a better deal”

Basically said made an offer, if your talking $250, fine, but the fact that I was there discussing that vehicle was proof to them it was appropriately priced. They can see every other car online too.

The internet had completely changed used car buying

The dealership buys a car for x amount. The owner adds his cut and then it goes through maintenance and cleaning. They mark up the car to be a profit and put it out for sale. Sometimes because of a poor buying manager they quickly are in the car for more than it’s worth and are actually at their best price.

Many times They can tell you till they are blue in the face they won’t budge, but ultimately it’s the same concept as 1987. You negotiate them down to the best deal you can get and if the sales manager sees that he is making even a smaller profit on you he’ll cave.

Simply untrue on part of the salesman. Last year I was looking at a Challenger and Camaro. I wanted the Challenger but the Camaro was such a good deal. I went to look at the Challenger and told them I wanted the Challenger but had a hard time passing up the deal I saw on the Camaro. They worked with me.

Dont know many used car dealers here who are getting cars for black book.
The industry has changed a lot in the past 2 years.

I really don't see how. Just because you go to look at a vehicle doesn't mean you're dead set on buying it.

Any salesman that pulls that shite is trying to be manipulative and anyone who falls for it isn't too smart. You have the money. He wants the money. Make him convince you to give him money.

Just bought a 2019 Odyssey EX-L with Nav and Rear Entertainment for $36.5K.

I looked for a low mileage used Odyssey, but most were base models and were fleet vehicles (assumed they were rental vehicles).

I said I would never buy a new vehicle ever again - we went in 2015 looking for a slightly used Murano - looking to spend around $25k. Couldn't find anything decent under 30k that had everything we wanted. Ended up buying a new one loaded for $33k after incentives and got 0% financing.

The internet is your friend. The last vehicle I purchased was several states away. Found what I wanted in BTR area but dealer would not budget. I told him about two identical vehicles in two states that were thousands less and I would travel to save that kind of money, he called my bluff and I purchased out of state- saved enough money to have a mini vacation and still have money in my pocket.
