Bacon,

I'm eligible for USAA, my main purchases are gas, groceries, and alcohol

would USAA be a wise choice?

Pretty much this.

1. Find out where you spend the bulk of your money, gas, groceries, department stores, else...
2. Decide what kind of rewards you want.. as mention above.
3. Determine if you want to have multiple cards, just one, etc.
-- eta: The most effective way to optimize your cash back, rewards, etc. would be a combination of 2-3 cards that cover the majority of your spending habits at cash back rates of 3-5%. However, if you spend large and rather broadly and only want one card, finding a 2% cash back on all purchases may be something to consider.

In addition, you need to determine if the cash back you get back would offset the annual fee is applicable. Otherwise, what's the point.

I would also consider interest rate and other perks as well.

USAA is great for insurance... I have my auto and renters through them (luckily I have never had to file a claim... Knock on wood)

My 1st credit card was/ is a USAA MasterCard and I keep it empty and on hand for emergencies. It has a very low APR.

There are better options for earning points from Amex for gas and Groceries.

So Amex has the best Gas and Groceries cash back program I have read on this thread.

Are most cards going to have similar interest rates? Is there a chart somewhere that shows what cards have the lower interest rates, annual fees, and cash back options?

If not, someone needs to make this.

I was using Amex blue cash preferred for gas and groceries and virtually everything else.

However I recently applied for a penfed card for the 5% gas vs 3%

This will probably be the best setup for me. The penfed doesn't have an annual fee though you have to join the CU which costs about 15 bucks plus a 5 dollar deposit

The Amex preferred is 75 a year but I got 150 for signing up at the time and the 6% on groceries pays for itself of you shop for a family. Just FYI, SAMs, Walmart, and target don't count as grocery

I typically use albertsons for that. Albertsons also sells many gift cards to other retailers so it's not a bad idea to do some Xmas shopping there if you like to buy gift cards.

Eta: you shouldn't be worrying about interest rates bc carrying a balance is not recommended on a rewards card. If you can't pay it off every month, the rewards are pretty much negated

Another perk of Amex is their buyer protection. You typically get to double manufacturer warranties on purchases as well as return protection at retailers for stuff they don't want to take back for certain reasons

How is your credit?

If you've never had a credit card, Amex can be kind of strict so don't be terribly discouraged if you are denied

Would you mind if I referred you for a bonus?

If youre open to that, send an email to croacka@gmail.com and I'll send the referral to your email address

I think you get a bonus as well

My email is _______________

I will probably be denied from Amex. My credit score is around 640 and I had one credit card in my name in college that sat around for a couple years without a payment (thanks to my dad for not telling me there was a balance after he set it up for me for emergencies). It is paid off completely now however.

I use Chase Freedom. Great card. No annual fee is what is important to me along with the cashback rewards. Until I start to use my credit card a lot with a big credit line then Chase Saphhire would be my option or AMEX.

I use this. It was actually my first card, then later I added on the Amex Blue cash. I basically use the citi forward at amazon, restaurants, movie theaters, or at places that don't accept amex etc. and Amex for everything else.

It's a point system so it's not a true 5% gain on restaurant purchases. It's 5x the points on those purchases. They are also pretty good about offering extra deals throughout the year. In any case, while it's not a true 5% back on those purchases, depending on what you select as you reward (whether's it's a statment credit or gift card) your % back will vary. I typically wait till I get enough for $50 amazon gift cards and cash out. That equates roughly to 4% cash back rate.

Yeah, you have to be careful spending "points"

Sometimes the rate is 1:1 on gift cards but you can be suckered into merchandise purchases like 100,000 points for an iPad or something similar
