Does anybody have any opinions of the best programs around the country for aspiring CFOs? I see a lot of schools have a short (three day or week long programs), but I’m wondering if anyone out there offers a real course of study? Looks like Columbia offers a pretty decent program, anyone know of anything else? Thanks!

Funny you posted this.

The Columbia program looks good on paper. I sorta want to enroll….it gets the best ratings. The promotional material looks really, really good.

My problem is that I am semi retired and spend a large amount of my time in rural delta enjoying a peaceful life - will travel for consult or short term work these days.

If I was in my early 30s with the same strong accounting and finance background I had, hell yes.

Hope you have a good business undergrad first. I was a hospital CFO for over 30 years and the biggest thing is learning how to manage others and come to grips with the fact you are no longer in the black and white world of accounting and in the gray world of Administration.

Some good courses to take are ones like negotiation and handling politics.

I looked this up. I think that’s a waste of time and won’t provide you what you think it will. I’m ex big 4 with a MBA and undergrad in accounting and was the CFO of a company for 7 years before we sold.

Get an undergrad in accounting. Go to a MACC program that has either a CPA/MBA express track. Do 10-12 years in public and you’ll start getting noticed by the large companies.

Or work your way into a PE/VC firm, if you have what it takes they will place you in those roles of the company they have positions in.

NYU grads are in very high demand especially for top banking positions.

It also helps you have a ton of banking in that area.

OP, what are you looking to do more specifically? I'm not an accounting or finance person, but I've never really heard someone say "how do I become a CFO". Its usually more specifically get into finance or accounting or be a CEO?

What's your background? As said determining if you are going accounting with finance minor basically or finance with accounting minor is the start?

This is so true. It's nice to have the fancy acronyms all over your resume but, at the end of the day, being the smartest financial cat in the organization isn't necessarily required. CFO's have much more of a global oversight and the majority of the role is about being decisive and managing people (emphasis on people, because they're more than just employees).

Those executive education programs always felt like money grabs to me

ETA: What's your background career/education wise?
