Also, what is the board's thoughts on things like Credit Karma and the like. I don't have that much debt money-wise, but I have several smaller debts spread out. I finally have some extra income and to devise a plan to raising my credit score.

The government mandates that you can have free access to your credit report once a year.

Here's the link...

LINK

FreeCreditReport.com and those other services are a scam. They make money off of giving you something that is free.

How is credit karma a scam?

I've been using it for over a year and have never had to pay a dime.

I'm sorry, you may be right. The other notorious one is called national credit report.com or something along those lines.

thanks for the info. Tell me more about Credit Karma. I downloaded the app, but when I tried to register, it said my name and social didn't match or some such nonsense. But is it just a good way to keep track of your credit, debts, etc...or do they give you advice?

The website is creditkarma.com. Go there and set up an account (it's free). I wouldn't use it to keep tract of credit card balances and debt (use mint.com for that).

It basically gives you an estimate of your credit score based on your credit information. It isn't exact but it will be within 10-20 points of your actual credit score.

If you have a citibank credit card, you can order their credit monitoring service for about 9 bucks a month. It comes with just about all the details you could imagine. I've been getting it for at least a year now and I love it. Definitely worth the 9 buck a month.

Not true.

Credit Karma scores can vary greatly from scores reported by MyFico.

Any resemblance to your FICO is purely coincidental.

Exactly. Their scoring models are nowhere near what FICO uses. My score went down on CreditKarma by 50 points so I bought my FICO score because I thought something had happened to lower my score. My FICO score had gone UP by 3 points. My CreditKarma score (provided by TransUnion) is about 70 points lower than my TransUnion FICO score I just got when I applied for a mortgage.
