that’s a pretty small company. She’d be lucky to sniff $125k.

her husband doesn’t work and they spend nearly 70k to send their kids to private school. No way she is only making 125k

You think she is making $400k?

OP good for you for posting a better than decent job, a lot of frickwads on here with no idea how much the average person makes just because they are lucky and have a great top 5% pay position.

Controllership at smaller companies can be straight garbage. They want someone who will supervise all AR, all AP, all of payroll, manage all the contracts, do all the various yearly insurance packages, tax plan, and oversee the annual audit.

It’s basically a hands on CFO for a smaller company, which, frankly is what most Controllers are trying to work theirselves into.

The only reason handling some of those things like AR would be difficult is because you have very bad staff under you.

Thanks......I'm in Northern Virginia and would say $200k is decent up here. It all depends on the situation though as our housing up here is $650-$1mm for a single family home, but you can send your kids to public schools for free (although our taxes are giraffe arse high). New Orleans you don't get that option so while the cost of living down there is cheaper it's somewhat offset by the cost to send your kids to private school I guess.

Cannot think of too many controller positions in the metro area that pay $400k especially for a company that small. . She could also have mounds of debt. I have known plenty who like to spend like they have high paying jobs to keep up with the Jones' and are loaded with debt.

Comp plan is up to $200k a year. There you have it. Fire away.
Whenever a recruiter gives you a number as the "comp plan" the salary is significantly lower. Everything like 401k math, insurance, FICA match, etc is included in that number usually.

This. Up to $200K also generally means they have no intention of paying anywhere near $200K, but it looks good on the job boards.

Yeah. My sister is a controller in the metro area for a company with about 150ish employees. I have zero idea what she makes but from her lifestyle I would assume (which I know is never good to assume) she makes double that.

absolutely not unless she is stealing from the company.

Yep. They won’t tell you the actual base cash compensation because then it’s not that impressive.

It’s like people freaking out about how much UPS baws got in their negotiations. Yea 170k is damn good money, but they aren’t getting anything remotely close to 170k in salary/wages. That 170k is their total comp.

It’s not nothing, but a job that comes with a 200k salary is materially different than a “comp plan” that comes out to 200k.

Jesus some of you guys are miserable AF. Was just trying to toss out there a position a friend (who’s outside of Louisiana) was recruiting for, hoping it might be enticing to better someone’s current life. And now it’s gone all kinds of sideways.

If not interested, just move along. I have no skin in this game so it doesn’t matter to me

I appreciate the post sir. Learned a long time ago not to assume anything like this for all parties involved. Could have made a friend and a stranger happy with minimal effort. I don’t make 200k but it was enough to make me look and assess

You are exactly right. That’s the problem these days. Everybody gets off on these wild tangents as they know it all already vs just having a quick 5 minute conversation with someone to find out the actual facts.
