Plus, I don't think those places use the brand and grade of motor oil they charge for. They pull the hose to fill your crankcase, who knows what oil that really is. It's not like they are bringing a jug of Mobil1 and cracking it open and breaking the seal

take 5 where i go literally cracks new bottles of mobile 1 and pours them in. one of the reasons i like going there

Good for you.

The Take 5 where I had the incident, when I proved there was no oil in the engine, they pulled down the hose from the reel on the ceiling. It was labeled Mobil1, but who knows.

When they crack open those new bottles, make sure they pour it in your engine before starting your car.

Do you get a notification from your car that often, or do you just take it in? I bet your Traverse tells you when it's time for an oil change, and I bet it's more like 7-8-9k miles depending on your driving habits. 4-5k miles seems like a bigger waste of money than the possible overcharge.

Not really a way to beat without doing it yourself. Maybe can squeeze $20 out by shopping around, but you need to factor in drive time between the shops, as well. There’s also a huge advantage to doing it yourself. You’re less likely to screw it up unless it’s your first time.

Just make sure you’re honest with yourself about your time. On just about every DIY job, the time is much more than planned, as it starts from the minute you walk out in the garage, gather the oil/filter, pull out the right tools, lay down cardboard, etc. If you start a stop watch on your phone, and then end it when you finish washing your hands, it’s usually MUCH more than you think (It also depends on how careful you are, or if you are focusing on moving quick). Then, just put a fair price on your time if you were working OT or something else, and you’ll get a more accurate estimate. It’s probably a wash at the end of the day, at least for an oil change.

My Chevy dealer charges $59 for synthetic, tire rotation, and multipoint inspection. Put it on my GM Card and use reward points. No out of pocket for me.

You should try it with a vehicle that takes 15 quarts of Rotella-T 15W40.

Came to post this. Unless the truck is really being worked, trailering often, you can go 10k.
