Loved playing with the Marlins on Ken Griffey Jr. baseball on the 64 so I could play with him.

The Pirates are the best team to be in the minors with. Fastest route to the majors. All the guys I know knocking around in the minors wish they played with the Pirates because they would either be in the show or much closer then they are now.

Good luck to Zack. He'll do well. While the Tigers would have liked to have him, they wont miss a beat.

Can't blame a kid for going for the bucks, but I don't think he understands the rigors of minor league ball and the competition at the next level...he's going to find out that Mr. Baseball Louisiana don't mean nothing to the guys he's competing against...hope it works out for him...it's a big loss for our team, tho.

Wish he'd been a Tiger. I hope for the best, but, I am afraid that in four years, he'll be stuck in West Virginia with a 6-7 record and a 4.87 ERA.

See Blake Johnson (2nd Round) in 5 years 7-7, 4.66 ERA in AA; and
Beau Jones (41st pick) in 4 years, 2-4, 5.77 ERA in AA

Zack loves LSU and said all the right things, but his primary desire all along was to get his pro career started right away...I would have been more surprised had he not signed. My congrats to him and wish him the best of luck!!

Or he may follow the path of Sean West, Gil Meche, and Chad Gaudin...bottom line is the kid is doing what he wants to do and I'm confident he'll turn out well no matter what happens.

Exactly, and just about the time he gets his minors and early MLB learning curve down pat, he will become too expensive for Pittsburgh, then get traded to contending NYY, Bost, Atl, SF, Cali, LA, Chi clubs, Philly, Det,etc..for three prospects.

Pirates have become sellers ever since the Bravos gunned down Sid Bream's dream.

Pirate glory from mid '60s to early '90s..never since..they and KC are like TRIPLE/A-AND-A-HALF clubs allowed to play official games in the big league parks, with the travel perks, but for a fraction of the pay.

Happy for ZVR and his family, their financial security, and for his fast track to a MLB career.

Who'd we get that was a "star". I'll wait. We had a solid class but we didn't sign any of the guys in serious question.

God dammit you're a fricking moron. If by star you mean a top 10 round guy who is offered $1M plus, then yes, we signed no stars. However, if by star you mean really good 30th - 40th round players like Mahtook and a few top 20th round players like Jarred Mithcell -- We signed a whole class full of these guys.

Again, you're a fricking moron.

7 figures!!! Sucks, but you can't blame him for taking that offer.

That is a life changing amount of money.

Anybody surprised by this has no clue. You could see by his comments from day one that this is what he wanted.

Attending LSU will not get him to the big show any faster. The majority of players never make it to the bigs.

He'll get more instruction and practice time in the minors than he can ever get at LSU. And he gets paid.

Sad, but true. And after Uncle Same max taxes his SB his 10 year average pay for this deal is roughly $100K with his crap salary. To those who say it's a life changing amount of money I call bullshite.

To go from an allowance to 100k a year that sure seems like life changing money to me. If I could 100k a year now it would be life changing for me. If he never makes it to the Majors he has a better start in life than 90% of high school graduates.
