I have a philosophy. We’re here to follow the rules but as a compliance dept I want the first attempt to be “Yes”.

He feels that if a coach goes to compliance with something they should work towards getting them an answer of yes. If they can't give an answer of yes then they should be able to give the reasons why.

Notes added. Woodward isn’t interested in your typical compliance horse shite.

fricking FINALLY.
Our AD gets it. Do what's best for the school and programs FIRST.
How far would the Tigers have gotten in the tourney if SW had been hired before the season?

this is absolutely fantastic

Damn right. The compliance Dept should work WITH the coaches not against them
Posted on 5/3/19 at 6:33 am to covtgr
He's absolutely right. This is what any sort of compliance department should be doing. Saying No is easy for them. They don't risk anything that way. Too often they are allowed to take the easy way out. Leaders who are too disengaged, cowardly and/or incompetent (Alleva) allow them to get away with it. But it doesn't help the organization as a whole to just shut things down all the time.

they are drastically over the top, if the NCAA/ SEC does not require it why are being so extra

Why do you go somewhere else and go bother some other people?

As far as they did without Woodward.
Look, I'm excited as hell to have Scott Woodward. I'm glad Alleva is gone, I want FKA out yesterday, and I want the compliance people out last week. But LSU wasn't getting past Michigan State with Phil Jackson on the bench.

It may seem like a small change in perspective but it's actually a huge deal. Most corporate lawyers save themselves work, time and reputational risk by being conservative and saying no to any internal proposals that even slightly impact the status quo.
What you really need, and Woodward seems to get this, is a lawyer that is willing to take risks and do the work/research to define what's allowable. It takes more effort and a lawyer fully committed to the success of the larger organization. It is not a lawyer/administrator who's primary concern is CYA.

I do not believe that is a small change in perspective. I only base my opinion on several years of history reviewing the actions of our compliance department. It needs a serious overhaul, and it looks like the job is in progress.

You're out of your mind, Alleva's position is never yes, it might be no but hurry up and suspend just in case its maybe
