Yes Harvin, Demps, Rainey, and Murphy were/are fast. But team speed was not our problem on D last year. Teams with far less speed than UF (UGA, Troy, OM) all moved the ball easily on us.

Our problems on D were: 1) poor schemes to begin with, b) confusion due to over-substitution, and c) poor technique, i.e,. bad tackling.

Michigan didn't beat Florida with speed in their bowl game in '07. They beat the frick out of Tebow. Do that and LSU will be the only team that beats UF next year.

Yea, Chavis has had good defensive showing against FLorida and the Florida offense this year isnt nearly as potent without Harvin, because even without him getting the ball you still need to account for him. Im very confident we can slow down the Florida Offense to very little porduction but the question in my mind is will we be able to score enough on their D.

Speed has nothing to do with lining up wrong.

+1 Tebow is 51% of the gator package. As goes his misery in the backfield, so goes team timing, execution and confidence.

I have to believe Chavis recognizes this.

If our D don't improve this year on the pass rush it will be ugly again.

Something else people don't think about, a lack of discipline on D makes you look a whole lot slower than you really are too. Improper pursuit angles will make an extremely fast player look like an idiot. I saw a lot of bad angles taken last year. That has to do with coaching, motivation, and pride, all of which I think we lacked last season. This coming season, watch out, it will be a different story.

Yeah. We seemed so damn slow because of the shitty job Malveto did of preparing our D. They had to think wayyyy too much, thus making them look alot slower. Chavis can bring in that system of D where he knows what he wants done, our players know what to do, and they can actually just react instead of stop, think twice about their position and then react.

Im a fan of loading the box, taking away the little speed option to demps/rainey/moody to the outside, and the runs up the middle. Brick has brought back the smash mouth attitude to the DL that C. Alexander said hasnt been around since the Saban days which is also VERY encouraging. Lets make Tebow throw to some WR's that havent played alot while being put under pressure. Take away their run, and I think we are more than capable of holding them under 21 pts. I believe in Ron Cooper and what he can do with a young, VERY talented secondary, so if we can get that pressure on the QB and leave it up to PP, Hawk, Jai, Coleman, Brooks Id be happy.

And there is no more Harvin. Thank God.

there are 2-3 players on FL offense last year that not one person one our D could keep up with
That was likely true of our offense against their defense almost as often as it was true of their offense against our defense. It's not unusual for the fastest guy on the field to be on offense. It IS unusual for that to result in 50+ points. They had a well-executed offense (especially the night we played them) and we had a very poorly executed (and likely poorly planned) defense. That was the predominant factor in the blowout margin, not a huge gap in player speed.

And the same could be said about those same 2-3 players against any other D in the country.
sure, sure. which is why its silly to say it had nothing to do with speed
I guess the best way to make the counterpoint is that the same thing could be said of Florida's offense and our defense in 2007.

safety and DE

Chad Jones and Ron Brooks are at safety. How many safety tandems are faster than that? Not UF's. Not Bama's. Not anyone we're going to have to worry about in the SEC.

I like this.

A lot.

LSU has the athletes.

I haven't been much of a fan of peleni's D either when he was here, except for periods of the 2006 defense.

seemed very "bend and not break"

I like the attacking style defense.

it forces college players to make quick decisions, and puts pressure on QB's.

kinda like manieri's style of baserunning.

forces the other player to make a great play.

Exactly. Tebow is a good player, and if we can attack him and hit him like we all think we should, he is still gonna beat us a few times for a couple big plays, but thats what you risk attacking one of the best players in CFB. Dont think we are goin to completely shut him down, hes got too much heart.

Now on the other hand, our offense vs their D is a whole different story... We can hold UF to under 21 all we want, but we STILL have to score more than that to win...

Nonetheless, its goin to be awesome!
